I'm wondering if this article title should be changed, per WP:COMMONNAME. The most commonly used version of her name appears to be simply "Mary T. S. Schäffer" (approx. 4,400 Google hits, 5,760 Google Book results), also appears to be the most common named she used in her own works (e.g. Among the sources of the Saskatchewan and Athabasca rivers, Old Indian Trails, "Botanical notes"). WorldCat also lists her as "Schäffer, Mary T. S." Other name variants include "Mary Schäffer Warren" (4,770 G-hits, 3,580 G-Book hits), or "Mary Schäffer" (many thousands of hits, but these also include all "Mary Schäffer Warren"s). The current title appears relatively rarely used: only about 400 G-hits, and 130 G-Book hits). Pretty much every permutation of the above names and initials can be found in use, as well as "Mrs. Charles Schäffer". Obviously the latter should not be used as title title but might aid in locating additional sources. Note also that some sources use the orthographic variant "Schaeffer" to refer to both Charles and Mary. Lastly, there is inconsistency in Mary's maiden surname: 'Sharples' versus 'Sharpless'. Skidmore, 2017,[1] notes Mary Townsend Sharples Schäffer was the daughter of distant cousins Elizabeth Cope Sharples (1830–1903) and Alfred Sharpless (1822–1903), and that while Mary's brothers used the paternal spelling Sharpless, Mary kept the maternal form of Sharples.
I would vote for either Mary Schäffer Warren (1st choice, most inclusive) or Mary T. S. Schäffer as article title.
Regardless of what article title is used, references to Mary throughout the text might require some clever handling, as she certainly wasn't born as Schäffer or Warren. Following Manual of style for maiden names and using Hillary Clinton as an example, this article might use her maiden name until she marries Charles, then refer to her as Schäffer (or Mary/Mary Schäffer if needed to avoid confusion with her husband per MOS:SAMESURNAME), then perhaps Warren, or Schäffer Warren, after marrying Billy Warren. --Animalparty! Hi @Animalparty:, I got the name Mary T. S. Schäffer Warren from the missing pages list of the Women in Red contest. I complete defer to your judgement regarding the best name to use.
I did not notice that her maiden name has two spellings. Is there a best source for that one?
Since WorldCat uses Sharples, and given the discussion of the two names in Skidmore, I'd say that "Sharples" should be the name used in this article for Mary. --Animalparty! (talk) 20:23, 24 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
