Mary was a Plantagenet Princess of England, given that she was 6th in direct male-line descent from King Edward III of England. Accordingly, since the illegitimate children of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster] were later legitimized, their male-line descendants should hold the title of Prince/Princess of England, or very least, of The House of Plantagenet. Given that, Mary SOmerset should be known as Princess of Somerset, as the current Eugenie and Beatrice are Princesses of York, and are not known "of England."

The title of Princess is rarely carried beyond 2 generations from the monarch. Eugenie and Beatrice are titled Princess because they are granddaughters of the monarch. Lady Mary is considered a member of the House of Beaufort. The Beaufort children were not given the titles of Prince or Princess even though they were grandchildren of Edward III because their half-brother Henry IV inserted a clause excluding them from the succession into the Act of Parliament that legitimized them. In this he was likely following the rules of succession of France, which also excluded legitimized children from the succession. The legality of this clause has been questioned and was ignored at the accession of Henry VII, who was the direct heir of the Beaufort line. Even if the Beauforts had been allowed the titles of grandchildren of the monarch, only the 1st generation of Beauforts would have been titled Prince or Princess.

Date of birth? edit

If Mary is the daughter of Charles Somerset's 2nd wife Elizabeth West, how could she be born in 1497? While I have seen 3 different dates of death for Charles' 1st wife Elizabeth Herbert, none of them are before 1503. A 1497 birth year would also make Mary 38 years old when she married and 39 when she gave birth to the 1st of her 3 children - not impossible but very late for that era. I have seen 1515 listed as her birth year and her parents' marriage as 1514, which makes more sense, but I don't have a source for this either. Anyone know of a reliable source to confirm one of these dates? History Lunatic (talk) 03:43, 10 January 2013 (UTC)History LunaticReply
