Speedy deletion of Marryatville Primary School edit

A tag has been placed on Marryatville Primary School requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. that was quick, however have placed the hangon as requested. examining the section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion it specifically excludes schools! so does not seem valid to cite this as reason for deletion. many many primary school articles of good quality and long standing appear on wikipedia. I believe this article is in good faith a valid stub.ROxBo (talk) 13:09, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Redirect? edit

I propose that this article be redirected to another article as there is no indication that this school is notable. The long held consensus at AfD is that articles on primary or elementry schools is that they should be redirected in this way unless they meet the general notability requirements. Personally I think it should be redirected to Marryatville, South Australia#Schools as it's mentioned in that article. It would appear however that the school is actually in Kensington, South Australia so this is also a possible place to redirect to. Trying to get consensus on this as there is a danger of there being an edit war. Dpmuk (talk) 14:12, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Many such similar articles of primary schools are considered notable and well-established. Your cited A7 reason for speedy deletion is also incorrect and inappropriate, as has been pointed out to you. In good faith I think article is a valid stub. Will put back again and please discuss. Please show me precisely where Wikipedia has stated that primary schools are not-notable, but high schools are. Cheers ROxBo (talk) 01:30, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Firstly please get your facts right. If you look at the edit logs you will see that I actually removed the speedy request as schools are specifically not included in the A7 criteria. I also feel that you are not assuming good faith with your comment "Will put back and please discuss" as I notified you of this discussion and left it for over a week before reverting - I can not be expected to wait for ever and I tried, in good faith, to involve you in a discussion. WP:OUTCOMES lists common outcomes and you will see under education that there is a precedent for redirecting elementry / primary schools. If I was to take the time I could find many such AfDs but it does not seem worth my while. At the moment two editors feel that this page should be a redirect and only you feel otherwise. I did not notify RadiFan2 of this discussion for fear of canvassing. I will start a request for comment below. Dpmuk (talk) 00:24, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Request for comment : Should this page be a redirect? edit

Should this page be a redirect. See above for some previous discussion. Dpmuk (talk) 00:24, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Per the RFC given, the schools notability discussion, the common deletion outcomes for schools, and the general notability guidelines, this K-7 article lacks sources to indicate it is truly notable on its own. Given that, it should be deleted or redirected. Given the standard outcome of school deletions, it would be better to merge and redirect it into the article on Kensington, South Australia (which already has some content on the school. tedder (talk) 19:59, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Established practice here is that primary/grade schools are generally not notable - there can be exceptions if the school really is notable in its own right but this one does not seem to be. It should be merged with and redirected to Kensington, South Australia. – ukexpat (talk) 21:00, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Or to Marryatville, South Australia#Schools. – ukexpat (talk) 21:03, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Done Per apparent consensus here and at WP:EAR, I've merged relevant material from this article into Marryatville, South Australia#Schools. In the absence of any speciifc schools guideline the article is subject to the standard notability criteria, and possibly also those thta apply to corporations or organisations. In either case, the criteria requires significant coverage in reliable secondary sources. No such sources are either provided or asserted for this school.
This is not to suggest such sources cannot be found - the school is more than a century old and someone with access to the relevant historical records may well find sufficient coverage to meet the requirement. If so, as the article has not been deleted it would be an easy matter to undo the redirect and add the referenced and notable material. In the interim however the debate on redirecting or retaining has been open for more than a month and there is consensus for a redirect to either Marryatville or Kensington.
I selected Marryatville rather than Kensington only because it had a better developed schools section and the material fitted better. Anyone should feel free to relocate it to Kensington, noting where you got the material for GFDL reasons. As mentioned above anyone should also feel free to reverse this redirect, if they have references to show the school meets the notability criteria sufficient to warrant its own page.
