Speed data

edit

Recent show on the Virginia class on the Discovery channel mentions the ADCAP runs at around 60 knots. --Calyth 03:54, 18 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Designed by the Royal Navy?

edit

I am unaware that the Royal Navy designed the Mark 48, I believe at the time they were involved in the testing and production of the Tigerfish Torpedo which was a far inferior design and was replaced by the Spearfish Torpedo which is at least as good as the latest ADCAP Mod 6. Given the restraints on the British defense spending I have a bit of a problem believing that they would design a Torpedo for the US and then develope a worse design for themselves... Anything is possible but we really need a citation for that one. Tirronan 16:31, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

An American research scientist directed the program that developed the Mark 48 ADCAP. He either served in, or acted as a contractor for, the US Navy for more than 50 years. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.145.104.73 (talk) 05:30, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rename/move proposal

edit

Would there be support for moving this article to "Mark 48 torpedo"? Most of the internal links point to that page, which in turn redirects here; it's also a more descriptive name when the article shows up on category lists. Engineer Bob 07:35, 27 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm for it. - Alureiter 15:23, 27 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Article has been moved; I'm in the process of cleaning up the remaining redirects. Engineer Bob 08:16, 2 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

"The official performance data may be a gross understatement, according to non-military sources that put the depth at greater than 600 meters, the top speed between 60 to 75 knots (110 to 140 km/h), the range at top speed at more than 20 nautical miles (37 km), and the range at lower speeds at more than 30 nautical miles (56 km)."

This is about as bad a case of unsourced statement as possible. Putting here if someone complains. Just in case, this is incorrect anyway, particularly the speed speculation. CP/M comm |Wikipedia Neutrality Project| 07:19, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Measurements

edit

The primary units of measurement in this article ought to be feet and inches for small measurements and yards, knots, and nautical miles for large measurements because those are the units used by the US Navy, and any official data is published under those parameters. 66.71.40.143 (talk) 09:43, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you look carefully at one of the toolboxes, the logo "snap-on" is backwards. Flipping the image horizontally will correct this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.113.85.199 (talkcontribs)

This was the torpedo, which destroyed KURSK submarine. Please add this to the article — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.75.165.204 (talk) 05:32, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

That is plain silliness. A Russian submarine was carrying an American Mark 48 torpedo? The Russians have quite capable torpedoes of their own.Wzrd1 (talk) 00:27, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Which specific HE does the Mk 48 use? Nuclear_torpedo#Replacement suggest that it's HBX-3, but the sources are books that I can't access. Artoria2e5 🌉 12:24, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
