Agree Marine Reserves different

edit

Yeah these are two separate and distinct concepts under California law and undoubtedly in other jurisdictions there should be separate articles definite.y. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikidgood (talkcontribs) 02:25, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Glitch

edit

For some reason the United States section does not load in my browser so I left the information in the North Pacific section, which is not inappropriate as it is California coastal water jurisdiction anyway. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikidgood (talkcontribs) 02:24, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Suggested merger of Marine Reserve and this article

User Beland suggested this. Why did you suggest this? --Pepijn Koster 15:03, 2 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Why is this page now merged with the Marine reserve article? These are two different things.-- unsigned comment added 17:04, 13 September 2006 by 217.121.193.200

I drastically hit this piece. Comments appreciated. It's an important subject, worth a lot more content than it now reflects. I'd love to see some expert knowledge add some facts about what's actually going on in other MPAs. Lfstevens (talk) 15:32, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Criticism Missing

edit

Why is there no criticism section on this page? Many organizations, including environmental orgs, have spoken out about the threat of misguided MPA's to the property and land usage rights of indigenous populations. I'm starting one now... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jwedes (talkcontribs) 17:00, 24 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Enforcement measures

edit

Shouldn't we mention means on how to help maintain MPA's ? I'm thinking for example of the placing of obstructions (such as reef balls, ...) and the use of "scarefish" for example the Infrasound Fish Fence and Neptun Electrical Fish Barrier[1][2] Scarefish can help to get the fish population move more towards the shore rather than grouping further away from shore; the advantage of this is that the fish can't be caught by large vessels (who would fish there illegally) then due to the shallow depth near the shore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doyna Yar (talkcontribs) 16:51, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to 2 external links on Marine protected area. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Article Organization

edit

In my opinion, I think there are too many sections to this article. I'm proposing that some the sections be combined and that the general order of the article also be changed to something similar to the protected area or national park articles. First, I think terminology and classification could be combined into a 'Definition' section. If not then we could keep it as is, back-to-back sections at the beginning. However, more importantly, there are several sections that do need to be combined. For instance, I think the 'Stressors', 'Coral reef', and 'Fish' sections can be combined into a larger 'biodiversity/ecology' section that briefly explains primary productivity of the oceans, biodiversity and range of biomes, trophic levels/food chain, maybe some ocean physics/chemistry, and then human (climate change/overfishing) and natural stressors to these systems that gives the reader better understanding for why marine protected areas are important and deserving of protection. Next I think that 'History' section needs to be created out of a combination of the 'International efforts' and 'National efforts' sections, which I feel should be more 'current events' style. The history sections could include something along the lines of the first protected areas ever plus the treaty frameworks including the UN, UNCLOS specifically, the ATS, and other international agreements. Also, this is a complicated topic so if written in chronological way including discussion of parallel MPA achievements according to different national or state efforts like California, that would be best. Next I believe the 'Management', 'Assessment', 'Success Criteria', and 'Enforcement' sections could be combined into just a 'management' section. These are all definitely a part of management by which ever agency or group overseas the MPA. After all that, I think you can keep the 'Economics' section as a standalone section or include it in some sort of larger 'benefit to humanity section' followed by the 'International and national efforts' section that expands up the history section more thoroughly via specific programs and MPAs. I think the 'Criticism' section should remain last and I honestly believe that the 'Misconception' section is about management or goal setting so that can be dissipated appropriately.
