Nice photo, but wrong
editIn the process of updating the information on 'pyrite disease' I also removed the nice, but wrong, photo of the pyrite disk from Sparta, Illinois. It's pretty much agreed now that these things are Pyrite and not Marcasite, so showing it on this page is not appropriate. I've also removed the comment about it being a recognisable form of marcasite. --Jolyonralph 20:38, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
The caption of the photo is wrong
editThat's not a geode of marcasite (geode means vug). The picture represents the two parts of a breaked bowl of radiated marcasite, probably found in the chalk cliffs along the Channel, north of France.
- I changed the caption. If you think it needs further clarification, please feel free to change/add it. --DanielCD 12:49, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Synthetic marcasite
editSynthetic marcasite is a common industrial product. Much is sold for jewelry manufacture. That may actually be synthetic pyrite but it really does not look like pyrite. It is black or dark gray--as the mineral marcasite often is. It is also used in research, apparent mostly for battery research:
What is this synthetic marcasite? Do the jewelry supply companies even mean the same thing by the term as the research laboratories do? Colin McLarty (talk) 08:50, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
