Spelling

I am not sure if the name is "maned" or "manned," as I have seen it spelled both ways. Do we have any referance to this version of spelling?--71.233.5.130 (talk) 19:33, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

The root of the word is 'mane' - this refers to the long hair on the neck of an animal, like a horse. The wolf's mane is clearly visible in the pictures. 'Manned' is an adjective of 'man' ie: "Transporting, operated by, or performed by a human: a manned spacecraft; several manned lunar landings."

So no, there is one spelling.

Where did you find the Hungarian name-thing? Because I am from Hungary, and I don't know anything about this "distortion". Hungary is in Middle Europe, why would there be a special Hungarian name. The Maned Wolf in Hungarian is "Sörényes Farkas", meaning word by word the same. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.223.143.28 (talk) 20:49, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes; the Hungarian thing should be removed.
The jubatus in the former scientific name Chrysocyon jubatus means 'maned'. Mane is also represented by harja in the Finnish name "harjasusi", by Mähne in the German name "Mähnenwolf" and by man in the Swedish name "manvarg" – the latter might be suspiciously 'werewolf'-like to those who don't know the language well. I agree that the Hungarian thing should be removed; the Oxford English Dictionary online, draft revision June 2008, gives the spelling maned wolf; it falls under the word maned 'having a mane'. I'll remove the Hungarian thing now. Alarichall (talk) 22:03, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Cattle Predation

Edward Luttwak's article on raising cattle in Bolivia (http://www.lrb.co.uk/v23/n03/edward-luttwak/sane-cows-or-bse-isnt-the-worst-of-it) indicates at several points that maned wolves prey on calves. This article states that this is now known to be false, but it doesn't cite any evidence that I could see.74.80.63.211 (talk) 03:13, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Phylogenetic tree

Could someone add a root to the tree with the label "Cerdocyonina"? I've tried, and all I make is a mess. In fact, is there an article on the cerdocyonines? It's a monophyletic group encompassing all South American canids. Mariomassone (talk) 23:47, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

@William Harris:, don't suppose you could give it a try? Mariomassone (talk) 09:41, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
I will certainly give it a go, M. William Harris • (talk) • 11:00, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
