Synonym edit

Hello @Plantdrew:, According to WFO this is a synonym of Machilus wangchiana , could you please give advice if this article should be moved there please? Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 02:46, 18 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Hughesdarren:, POWO also has this as a synonym of Machilus wangchiana. Based on the major plant databases, I think this title should redirect to Machilus wangchiana. But the current content of this article isn't necessarily true for Machilus wangchiana. ''M. wangchiana wasn't discovered recently in a metropolitan area, and probably doesn't have a quinquiennial bloom cycle. Many Lauraceae species don't bloom every year, but as far as I know, none of them actually have any sort of regular bloom cycle. In some years conditions are right for blooming, in other years they are not. Observing a small population of a (putative) Lauraceae species over several years might result in a repeated multi-year cycle of blooming. But I wouldn't assume that an observation of 3 blooms every 5 years over 15 years implies a quinquiennial bloom cycle. Show me blooms every 5 years over 100 years, and maybe there's an actual cycle and not just coincidental appropriate conditions for blooming. If you want to redirect Persea kadooriei and make a new article for Machilus wangchiana, go for it. If you want to move the current article to a new title, I think it should be revised to remove claims about range and bloom cycle. Plantdrew (talk) 03:28, 18 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking a look @Plantdrew:. I had thought as much but just wanted to be sure before I pressed ahead with the page move. I will also make the revisions to the text you have suggested. I've just notified the page creator in case they have an opinion on the planned move. Best Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 04:08, 18 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Feedback from New Page Review process edit

I left the following feedback for the creator/future reviewers while reviewing this article: Hello, Thanks for creating the article but this plant looks to be a synonym of Machilus wangchiana and will be moved there instead. There are some notes on the current articles talk page you may want to take a look at. Best Regards..

Quinquiennial blooming edit

@Treeenthusiast:, I'm removing the claim about a quinquiennial bloom cycle. I discussed this already in the thread above. Many Lauraceae species don't bloom on an annual basis, or on any other consistent basis over the course of years. I had assumed that this claim was at least based on multiple observations of repeated flowering every 5 years, which could still well be coincidental if there are only a few such observations (over 10, 15 or 20 years). But I just read Kosterman's paper, and flowers were observed in 1972 and 1977 and the plant hadn't bloomed a third time as of 1980 (when Kosterman's paper was accepted for publication). One observation of 5 years between blooms over a period of 8 years is completely insufficient to establish that it has a consistent 5 year blooming cycle.
