Update History of MV Armenistis

On 15th November 2022, a group of pirates attacked on MV Armenistis at Turtle Islands near Sierra Leone and captured the vessel for taking it to an unknown location. The pirates damaged the AIS and other navigational and communication equipment. The Captain of the ship being an experienced person in such situation took control of one of the pirate at the ship's deck (while other pirates were busy in looting the entire ship), snatched his rifle, and shouted to call all his crew members to enter themselves in the safety room, and locked the safety room from inside. The pirates tried to open the safety room and fired; nevertheless, it was safe. The Captain pretended that he has contacted the Port Authorities on wireless and the Port Authorities are about to arrive at the Ship. The Pirates run away. During this struggle, the ship grounded in the sand near the Turtle Islands. The Captain waited for a high tide and tried to start the engines to pull the ship in the open waters. The ship was pulled out; however, in doing so the engine of the Ship has been badly affected. The ship than sailed to the nearest port of Freetown. The ship is anchored near Freetown and the insurance surveyor visited the ship for assessment of the total damage, and for preparation of Insurance Claim in this regard. “Sierra Leone:

On 15 November 2022, a Togo flagged Ro-Ro Cargo Ship, MV Armenistis, was approached and hijacked by pirates while steaming at position Latitude 07:12 North and Longitude 013:17 West, around 28nm SW of Turtle Islands, Sierra Leone at approximately 1930 UTC.

Around seven pirates armed with guns and knives attacked and boarded the ship underway. They hijacked the ship, took all crew as hostage and stole crew cash, personal belongings and ship’s properties. As the pirates were unable to navigate the ship correctly, the ship ran aground. The crew managed to free themselves, disarmed the pirates and retreated into the citadel. The pirates escaped after unsuccessful attempts to break into the citadel.
