Mount Desert Island Biological LaboratoryMDI Biological Laboratory – No opinion. Filed move request per recent cut-and-paste move (see page history). Staszek Lem (talk) 02:22, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment - While I was about to oppose this for being less clear and precise, and since we usually prefer to use full names over abbreviations, it does seem that this is the name the Lab goes by, to the extent that the current name of this page is not even written on their site. Additionally, there are more google results for the name using MDI in quotes than there are using Mount Desert Island.--Yaksar (let's chat) 05:36, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment - The institution no longer goes by "Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory", only "MDI Biological Laboratory", as reflected by its recent website changes and press materials. Please revert back to the name change. Mcrosenstein (talk) 11:34, 25 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
    • There is no such thing of what you think as "revert back" . Instead, there is a procedure of renaming wikipedia articles, please see Wikipedia:Moving a page. We are following it now in a hard way, because you have unknowingly done a disallowed cut-and-paste-move. Next time please use wikipedia menu item "Move page". History

edit

This article needs a History section. The Lab's website says only that it was "was founded in 1898 as a summer research and education facility" to "inspir[e] scientists to go into the field to study, compare, and elucidate basic biological processes in a diverse range of organisms".

No mention of who funded it, what institutions it was/is linked to, nor even, other than here in the Talk, a mention of the original name "Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory", nor when it was abbreviated, why, or by whom. When I see an institution whose name is an undecrypted set of initials, and especially when its own website chooses not to acknowledge it, I immediately want to know what they stood for and why they have been deprecated, and when. And I generally rely on Wiki to deliver the goods in that regard. Please address this! (I would happily do it if I knew the answers, or even where to find them. I'm sure anyone sufficiently interested in this article to read the Talk must know much more about this than I. 2001:56A:F0E9:9B00:445E:826C:4ADB:E855 (talk) 01:59, 5 December 2021 (UTC)JustSomeWikiReaderReply

Edit: I found this, a wealth of information for constructing a history section: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4596734/

Added brief history section with info from the source above and https://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2010.00013.
