Roman M or SI prefix M?

edit

With current knowledge of bill clintin, what is the most logical number to associate the letter M with?? Some people say a thousand from Roman numerals; others say a million from SI prefixes. Which is more natural?? 66.32.242.120 22:41, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I'd say that the most common use today is M = 106 (million) as per the SI prefix, or, in computing, M = 220 = 1,048,576 (mega). The Roman M, in my experience, mostly shows up in production/copyright year notices for movies, and in x-words... --Wernher 16:36, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Meaning for Wikipedians

edit

Would it be tacky to mention the meaning the letter M has for Wikipedians? ShutterBugTrekker 21:12, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

No, I think that is too specific, and it should be kept in Wikipedia:Glossary. SCHZMO 21:36, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Meanings shifted to disambiguation page?

edit

The Singing Badger "shifted alternate meanings to dab page". This is inconsistent with all other letters (A, B, C, etc.) and makes this page rather short. I rather like having the various meanings of the letter M on the M page, and propose that it be moved back. Discussion? --Erik Demaine 16:19, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the meanings ought to be on this page, but reworded to be more like an encyclopedia article and less like a PowerPoint presentation. ShutterBugTrekker 22:43, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry about that, I never thought to look at the other letters! I will shift everything back. The Singing Badger 00:16, 27 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is "it" a preferred term to "this" in Wikipedia articles? The article uses the word "this" and I may as well ask the question in the talk page. Speling12345 (talk) 2:12, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

I see two uses of this; the first could be changed to the and the second to it, but neither change would clearly be an improvement. —Tamfang (talk) 09:03, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

edit

would the fact that M is used in the Messier catalog be of enough importance to be included here?
