"reef" edit

I imagine that the word "reef" in this line is as translated into English from a Norwegian version of Hugo's work:

French writer Victor Hugo poetized in Toilers of the Sea admiring the scenery after a visit in 1866 that the Lysefjord was the most terrifying of the ocean reefs.

Is the meaning meant to refer to the inevitable saltwater rapid at the fjord's mouth (given that it's 13m depth there, vs much deeper farther in). If that's the case, the wording should be:

...the most terrifying of the saltwater rapids [along the Norwegian coast). In the Pacific Northwest, some of these kinds of rapids, also at the mouths of fjords, are called skookumchucks (strong waters), but obviously that word is not in general usage. If someone could provide the original wording from Hugo, perhaps I could come up with a better version....Skookum1 (talk) 02:44, 3 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Isolated or not? edit

The second paragraph says that residents can leave only by boat. The third says that they can leave one of the towns by road. — Wdfarmer (talk) 12:27, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think the second paragraph refers to people who live along the fjord, rather than in one of the villages at either end.-gadfium 09:18, 6 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
