Talk:Lymphad

this section seemed out of place, but possibly helpful for editors, so I put it here.

These identifications are based on Don Pottinger's illustrations in Clan Map, Scotland of Old (Bartholomew, Edinburgh), and in Roddy Martine, Scottish Clan and Family Names and there are many variations or examples of artistic licence. Outwith Scotland, the lymphad device is so widespread that we could hardly expect heraldic artists in Kent, etc. to obey any of the above instructions. For instance, in Pembrokeshire John Hook Campbell (a family connected with repelling the "Last Invasion" at Fishguard in 1797) bore, in the third quarter, a field Argent, a lymphad with full sail, oars in action and three flags all in Sable (Hatchments in Britain 2, Phillimore, Chichester: a hatchment at Hengrave, Suffolk). At a guess, anyone bearing the lymphad (except Gunn) ought to be claiming descent from Somerled, Lord of the Isles, though readers should always consult reliable genealogies.
