Semi-protected edit request on 8 December 2015

Please permit me to edit the Luis Suarez page. I read the news in the Times of India newspaper ,which displayed Lionel Messi's(Messi is a legend, we have to respect his thoughts)interview. He stated that Suarez deserved to be in the shortlist of the Ballon Do'r for the year 2015.

This statement proves that Suarez is a class apart.Below is the article from the Times of India Sports edition issued on December 1 2015.It is a big news for Suarez. He's become the talk of the football family.I look forward for a positive reply.

Not done First of all, an edit request is not for granting editors right to edit articles, it is not possible. Instead you should mention what edits should be made and provide a link to the source. Also, a player saying an other player of the same team deserves an award happens all the time and is not notable enough. If you ask different players who deserves it, almost all of them will say a teammate. Qed237 (talk) 16:42, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Individual Honors

What about the club world cup golden boot as an individual honor?? If it is one, then why is it still not added? Arka 92 16:54, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Football boot size? in EU and UK etc sizes please

Football boot size? in EU and UK etc sizes please. Q. Shouldn't All Footballers pages (articles) state feet size ?! Their height is showen but not boot/feet size. I seen (not sure if 100% accurate) a pair of adidas Messi boots on French eBay stating size uk 10 thats big feet for a 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in) man. Boxers on Wiki. have their Reach stated. To some people, footballers boot size is important info. I came to Messi's & Luis Suárez's Wiki. page "To Find Out" that Info.! Boot size, please. 86.162.253.244 (talk) 23:30, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Cannibalism

I don't think anything should be written here about the media referring to Suarez as a cannibal for biting so many people. It wasn't right for him to bite people, but calling him a cannibal, as a kind of negative sanction of his behaviour, isn't really productive. Better to just say his teeth repeatedly found themselves connected to people's bodies in a chomping manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.55.79.4 (talk) 22:00, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Height disputed

There's no way Suarez is 6 ft tall. The average height of a footballer is 5'11.5" and he's always one of the shortest on the pitch. I know there's a source for his height but I doubt it's accuracy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.176.58.49 (talk) 20:07, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

The height listed is backed up by the FIFA WC player list. Nzd (talk) 12:51, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Suarez is 5'11 according to imdb (181 cm) and Celeb Heights lists his at 180.5 cm. I think the height is accurate though, and we are sticking with 6'0, according to 2018 FIFA WC Player List (182 cm), Eurosport also lists him at 182 Suarez Player Profile: Eurosport, Goal also at 182, and Barcelona also list him as 1.82 m. Can we get rid of this please?

The line mentioning accusations of Suarez's cheating during the italian citizenship exam are utterly irrelevant to his player career as a whole. It didn't happen to the pitch, it isn't relevant to any transfers (it didn't change anything), and it sounds like something that should go in personal life if anything much like Messi's tax evasion accusations. Or Ronaldo's rape accusations. It has also been stated to be false after the Italian police conducted the research so it doesn't matter anyway.

Either way, it's sticking out and shouldn't be here. If anything, it'd be nice to add that he left on good terms all while being considered a legend by Barcelona.

Cool i would just like to mention that the game was in the 2004-05 season and not in the 2005-06 season where it is added. It was his debut and only game that season. So he played 35 games and not 34 games in total for Nacional.

No problem, just two minor things also. With the 1 new game added his career total in the Continental category seems to be 105 Apps and not 104 as before, the same with his career total in the total category is 661 apps and not 660 as before. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.234.134.192 (talk) 22:29, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

I find the section on the racial abuse incident highly biased and believe the inclusion of this sentence at the end of the FA's report paragraph would make it more balanced: This report has been highly criticized by Professor Aldo Mazzucchelli of Brown University, who argued that the Spanish-language evidence gathered is unreliable and inconsistent with Suarez' upbringing and dialect. The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: no consensus. Discussion unable to provide clear hints on who is the primary topic. Relisting does not seem to be a productive option, as unrepresentative recentism incurred by the death of one of the Suarezes seems to confound the issue further. Luis Suarez Miramontes has been !voted by IFFHS in 1989 as seventh the best European player of all time and is one of the most reognisable Spanish footballers in history. On the other hand the same organisation did not select UruguayannSuarez as top 10 player of the decade. No longer clear primary topic for Uruguayan one especially that in next few years he will be nearly retirement. Even Spanish Wikipedia does not have primary topic for Uruguayan, howeer, I would not be surprised if Spanish one will get primary topic in near future, after death of Spanish footballer and after retierement of Uruguayan footballer it is clear that Suarez from Uruguay will have by far decreasing arguments for primary topic (at least absoluetly in light of WP:Recentism). Pageviews are irrelevant, Apple inc. even does not compromise disambig meanwhile we here only talk.abour resign from primary for disambig. Uruguayan Sarez is not more important than Miramontes so is not thannall.topics put together. Dawid2009 (talk) 12:14, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

  • Support (as nominator I suppot my own proposal) Dawid2009 (talk) 05:47, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Oppose as he is also known for the rare biting incidents and is more famous worldwide than the Spanish one these days. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 19:57, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Support Obviously the Uruguyan is the most well-known and commonly searched Luis Suarez now, but it's clear recency bias that he's currently listed as the primary topic. Spanish Luis Suarez was once the most expensive player of all time and a Ballon d'Or winner, and the Uruguyan is neither of those. If we use the WP:Recentism ten-year test, when both players will be retired, I fail to see how a future reader who hasn't heard of either Luis Suarez would agree that the the Uruguayan is the primary topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by A wild wild world (talkcontribs) 11:56, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Support. Although the norm would be to move him to Luis Suárez (footballer, born 1987) and move the other footballers too. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:37, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. GiantSnowman 19:55, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Support to Luis Suárez (footballer, born 1987) per Necrothesp. GiantSnowman 19:57, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
Comment: it does seem likely that he will retire from professional football at some point this decade where he is a notable one worldwide.
As to naming: if that page does go to YOB, per Necrothesp above, the other three footballing "Luis Suárez"'s will need to be moved to 'footballer, born 1935', 'footballer, born 1938' and 'footballer, born 1997' from 'Spanish', 'Argentine' and 'Colombian' respectively. And I don't see any discussion on any of those talk pages which Neodop moved on 3 October 2021. Returning these pages whence they came would solve that part of the problem.
The Spanish historian is currently at Luis Suárez Fernández: there is only one source in there which does list him as that name but Amazon has him titled with the three names though many books only display the first two. And I'm unsure about the two 'See also' ones where the missionary one has more "Ruiz" than "Suarez", and the current Colombian one has "Suárez" on it's own in terms of surnames so the latter could also be moved per WP:COMMONNAME. Either way, I am now considering this one to use a valid identifier as they became more notable as footballers, though he may become a manager in the future, who knows. Thanks, Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 22:08, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
I've moved the other three back to the YOB disambiguation, as they were moved away from the standard disambiguation without discussion. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:43, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
We can do the same what is on Spanish Wikipedia (remember it is neutral as obviously Spansh language is also in Latin America so in Uruguay). Also, saying about coachinbby Uruguayan is WP:Crystall, indeed currently there are couple other managers called "Louis Suarez", how we can we be sure he will be famous coach because of current playing football. What we can see IFFHS did not ranked him in top 10 players last decade but Miramontes was !voted by that organisation as seventh player from Europe, in history as of contemporary 1989. Dawid2009 (talk) 07:04, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Oppose for now. I think he's still clearly PRIMARY, and we will have to wait a couple of years to wait and see if this changes.--Ortizesp (talk) 22:39, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

NOTE: User Ortizesp often at requests for moves has tendence for favourising recentism and big focuss on pageviews (and I already explained in rationale why pageviews not.always are relevant, please read it again). For example he was one of the few users who asked for snow close when was discussion about "Madonna (art)" vs "Madonna (entertainer)" Dawid2009 (talk) 06:44, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

  • Oppose. As a Spaniard, I feel like Luis Suárez is nearly as famous as current Suarez. Miramontes was surely a star in the 60s, but nowadays nobody thinks about the Spanish player when you say the name "Luis Suarez". SpaceCowboy1207 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 14:05, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Support use of revised parenthetical qualifier Luis SuárezLuis Suárez (footballer, born 1987) per Necrothesp and GiantSnowman. There are nine men, many of whom have high claims to notability, listed upon the Luis Suárez (disambiguation) page, thus use of the base name Luis Suárez (disambiguation)Luis Suárez for the dab page main title header seems most intuitive. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 09:54, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Oppose - Primary topic. See where we are in 2025.Fleets (talk) 10:06, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Oppose for now: This Suarez is the primary topic currently. We can decide how things will stand only in the future. Kpddg (talk) 13:05, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
Support as the Spanish Suarez has had a much more notable career. The only way the Uruguayan Suarez is more notable is recency bias.Crystalpalace6810 (talk) 21:28, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Oppose - IFFHS who? I don't think the opinion of one organization like that automatically becomes fact and should be used to decide whether one player is more recognizable than another. The Uruguayan Suarez is far superior in terms of stats and legacy, 4x the number of goals, whereas the Spanish Suarez has only won the Ballon d'Or which is the only big thing he's achieved better than the Uruguayan Suarez. People tend to hype up the olden day players more because they're gone and remain only in memory. That's why they underrate and don't give credit to the new players enough. Ae245 (talk) 22:42, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Support - I don't think that he is WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. The other Luis Suárez is really famous too, and there is a Colombian one who is making headlines as well. Luckily for us, all footballers called Luis Suárez have different nationalities, so we can disambiguate by nationality. 09:08, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
    • Actually, they don't. There are two Colombians. And we generally disambiguate footballers by YOB in any case. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:25, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Oppose - Per SpaceCowboy1207, though not as a Spaniard for me :).Jonteemil (talk) 09:27, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

There is currently no official news of his retirement, so do not show him as retired until official sources show that he is retired. 72.80.208.170 (talk) 17:02, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Agree, I see this is only at the "rumours" stage. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 18:55, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Is this time to redirect?

So Per previous discussion Spanish Luis Suarez died today, also according to Panheon.world The Spanish one is infinietly more notable. I made mistake that nominated to move Luis Suarez (Uruguayan footballer) instad Luis Suarez (footballer 1987 born). Luis Suarez from Uruguay ias also at semiretiremend as he did not play in Europe but beyon that per WP:recentism Uruguayan one shoul never be primary topic. Dawid2009 (talk) 10:40, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

For anyone who is confused

The Uruguayan footballer is still alive and healthy! The Spanish player who won the ballon d’or died! 2A02:C7C:AD6A:4400:3C1B:2C73:1206:3DE8 (talk) 12:41, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
