<Cityname> <City> edit

There is a discussion regarding the removal of the word "city" from the article titles of Philippine cities. This may imminently affect the article name for Lucena, Philippines. For city names which are not unique, disambiguation alternatives are also being presented. Formal request for page move may follow after a reasonable time of discussion. If you wish to participate, please post your comments here. --JinJian (talk) 05:02, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Requested move edit

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Move Lucena CityLucena, Philippines, Valenzuela CityValenzuela, Philippines, Angeles CityAngeles, Philippines as compromise solution because (1) opposition to current names is strong per WP:COMMONNAME, (2) opposition to proposed names disambiguated with "(Philippine city)" is strong as unsupported type of disambiguation per any guideline or convention, (3) regardless of what may have been stated at another discussion, no opposition has been expressed here to these names since they were proposed by User:LtPowers over a month ago (8 November) which are consistent with how cities in most countries are disambiguated.

Even at the other discussion very little explanation for opposition to this convention is given, and only by one person. If anyone is really opposed to disambiguating with ", Philippines" then they should propose another move and see if there is consensus support for their view. I just don't see it expressed here it all, much less explained. Born2cycle (talk) 07:03, 7 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lucena CityLucena (Philippine city) — Part of series of multiple page move requests involving Philippine cities under the category Local highly urbanized city name is the same with that of other foreign city, municipality but no other local city/municipal with the same name. This request is made after preliminary discussions for the removal of the word "city" from most of the article titles of Philippine cities and providing disambiguation wherever necessary. For more information please see Wikipedia_talk:Tambayan_Philippines/Task_force_LGU#Article_names_for_Philippine_cities:_.3Ccityname.3E_.3Ccity.3E. Relisted for further input. This makes sense as explained in WT:Tambayan Philippines/Task force LGU. I am under the impression that Filipinos call Angeles City simply Angeles. Is this the city's proper name? Is the word "City" not formally part of the name? Is this the case with other cities in Philippines? / edg 20:57, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Support for the numerous reasons I have stated over the years. See the linked discussion page in the proposal for details. --seav (talk) 00:48, 24 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose moving Angeles City. I have no opinion on most of these moves, but Angeles City is commonly known exactly that way in English, and it's better known in English than most Philippine cities are due to the bar trade. Gavia immer (talk) 00:16, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
While Angeles City like any other Philippine cities may not be totally uncommon, I doubt that it is more prominent than Angeles especially by the locals in their everyday language. --JinJian (talk) 03:21, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Their everyday language is unlikely to be English, and we go by the common name in English. For most of the nominated pages, there isn't going to be any common English usage, but for Angeles City there is. Gavia immer (talk) 03:32, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
It is not only the locals that are using Angeles, see Encylopedia Britannica on Angeles (Philippines). I really think that the root argument on the word "city" for Angeles is the same with that of other Philippine cities. --JinJian (talk) 04:08, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, that's fine - I disagree with you, and I've said so; that's all. Gavia immer (talk) 04:17, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Support for all cases as proposed, especially Angeles. Adding City appears to be a foreign convention. Please leave redirects from the current X+City names (as is done normally and by default in moves). / edg 15:46, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
This request for page move is primarily motivated to drop "city" as part of the article name. Correct me if I am wrong, I believe that you are also in favor of it or at least you are not against it, however, we differ on the way the article title should be disambiguated. If you have read Wikipedia_talk:Tambayan_Philippines/Task_force_LGU#Article_names_for_Philippine_cities:_.3Ccityname.3E_.3Ccity.3E, I also proposed the format Lucena, Philippines or Angeles, Philippines, however, I have to settle for Lucena (Philippine city) or Angeles (Philippine city) as a compromise. Your opposition may not go toward your cause except that it may be interpreted as in favor of status quo which I think is not your intention. --JinJian (talk) 07:18, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • I am neutral on whether the current article title should remain. I oppose the proposed disambiguation method. Powers T 14:59, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lucena, PhilippinesLucena, Quezon – This page should be moved to a City, State format to match other cities disambiguated in this format. Natg 19 (talk) 20:32, 5 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment Article is titled following WP:MOSPHIL (When to use , Philippines as part of the city article title).--RioHondo (talk) 01:39, 6 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
    • Oh, I didn't know that there was this standard for Philippines articles. In that case then, I cancel my move request. Natg 19 (talk) 05:07, 6 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
