Wimbledon record

I have changed the paragraph on Wimbledon as the official record says that she only reached the final in 1898. The system at the time was that the previous year's winner did not have to take part in early rounds, just to play the winner of the All Players final, which was thus really the semi-final. I assume that as she is said to have lost in the All Players final in all three years, in 1898 she was the loser in the real final because the previous year's winner did not enter, but I do not have any source to clarify this. You're right, in 1898 Blanche Hillyard didn't defend her title, so the all-comers final was already the "real" final, whereas in 1900 and 1901 the winner from the previous years took part in the tournament, so after the all-comers final the challenge round was played. The all-comers/all-players final usually was no "real" final (as there was meant to be the challenge against the winner from the previous year), but it was no real semifinal either. I guess it's just a question of terminology. I came across the expression "All-comers final", and as Louisa Martin did reach this round in all three years (1898, 1900, 1901), I added that to the article. We can leave the version as it is now, too, I don't mind.--Kompakt (talk) 19:33, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

I would think that this is sufficiently made clear by only listing the 1898 final in the Grand Slam finals section and in the infobox. Perhaps a note can be added to further distinguish the significance of the 1898 final compared to 1900 and 1901. However, it should also be made clear that her performance at these three editions was exactly the same, i.e. reaching the All-comers' final stage.--Wolbo (talk) 14:31, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
