Talk:Louis Späth

Notability edit

I first created this article because there was a redirect here to Franz Ludwig Späth but the IPNI had entries for both Louis Späth = L.Späth and Franz Ludwig Späth = Späth, so I assumed that these were different people.

In principle any botanist with an entry in the IPNI is notable, but of course there needs to be some biographical information as well, which at present there isn't.

Prior to today, the Harvard University Herbaria entry had "fl. 1880-1930" and the IPNI had no dates. I queried the difference with the IPNI, and both they and HUH have altered their date for him to the present "fl. 1892", saying to me by e-mail that the previous entry in HUH appeared to be wrong.

I think this article should be left for the present, in the hope that more information can be found. If more information can't be found, then this article could be deleted.

It's possible that Louis Späth is actually Ludwig Späth (1793–1883), Franz Ludwig Späth's father. Louis is the French version of Ludwig; the lilac Syringa 'Andenken an Ludwig Späth' is dated to 1883 by the RHS here, i.e. the year of Ludwig Späth's death; 'Andenken an Ludwig Späth' is also known as 'Souvenir de Louis Spaeth' and 'Andenken an Louis Späth' as a Google search will show. The fact that botanical names in the IPNI associated with him are dated to after his death (1892 and 1893) doesn't contradict this possibility because the publications seem not to be by him but to cite him as the author.
