Talk:Louis Fieser

I've modified the final quote on the page, ""I have no right to judge the morality of Napalm just because I invented it, nor was it my fault those bats got away from me, removing "it's not my fault the bats got away from me." It does not appear in the referenced Time article. This may be a concatenation of two quotes, but it is unlikely Fieser would have said this. He was not the driving force behind the bat experiment--that was Lytle S. Adams, a dentist. Fieser just designed the mini-napalm bombs. See the article "Bats Away!" in American Heritage, April/May 1982, Volume 33, Issue 3.

Bat Incident edit

Adding on the "bat-incident" the statement "Fieser omitted the account of the fires from his own account of the bat tests" is not true.

Namely, Fieser writes on p. 127/129 of his book ("The scientific method..", Reinhold, 1964): " (p. 127) In flying to Carlsbad, the colonel had landed at the Carlsbad Army Air Base, and had seen there a suitable test area. [...] The Colonel and I called on the Commanding Officer [= C.O.] [...] We were in luck. An auxiliary landing field had just been constructed in a remote area, and it was complete with observation tower and administration building. It was ours [.......] (p. 129) ... The photographer made ready to shoot and the rest of us were crouched around the sagebrush. Then someone glanced over his shoulder and saw smoke. The administration building was on fire. We saved the refrigerated truck parked alongside, but nothing else. The building, all our supplies, and some valuable photographic equipment, went up in smoke. The observation tower was a mesh of twisted steel girders. The test was over, and the Colonel and I had the unpleasant duty, in thanking the C.O. for his hospitality, of reporting the accident. The C.O. was not greatly concerned; after all, it was a secret project. [...] The accident really did not change the status of the project, which now seemed to me very promising..."

I am pretty sure this is the incident related to, and it is clearly reported in great detail by Fieser.138.246.2.48 (talk) 16:29, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
