This needs some more details:

The short answer is that there was a back door. In the corresponding French Wikipedia article, it's noted specifically that he and (uncounted) others left by "la poterne du Galion à l'arrière du fort", the postern at the Galion River at the back of the fort. A satellite view of the fort (now Fort Degrès, appropriately) shows the Galion nearby. Triplingual (talk) 02:43, 29 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
