Talk:Lottery betting

Globalize tag, and independent notability edit

Firstly, I added the globalize tag because all the sources in the article are from the UK. Most notably the only source discussing legality is about the UK law on the subject, so in reality the sentence's claim that it's legal in multiple jurisdictions is actually unreferenced. And while the newspaper articles do mention a US-based lottery (Powerball), the articles are about UK reaction to it and lottery betting on its outcome in the UK. In other words, this is an entirely UK-centric article, with no evidence that this "betting on a lottery's outcome with outside bookmakers" actually occurs anywhere else. I do know that in many jurisdictions, including the US, ticket reselling is outright illegal. I'm willing to bet (pun fully intended) that this is one of those "bet on anything" items that's part of British gambling culture. (Maybe Irish, too, but without some non-UK sources, that cannot be verified.)

More generally, though, even if it does, there's not much to show that this topic is independently notable, instead of something that could be a covered in a couple of paragraphs of the main lottery article. Even the title is unclear as to the content; as buying a ticket in a lottery is "lottery betting". Probably should be merged. oknazevad (talk) 22:24, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
