Talk:Lorena González (Seattle politician)

Should page be renamed?

edit

Just a thought, but I know Rob Johnson's page is Rob Johnson (Seattle politician) and searches for Lorena Gonzalez will often pull up the California politician. How big of a deal would it be to rename the page Lorena Gonzalez (Seattle politician) or should we just create a redirect? Jwfowble (talk) 17:32, 24 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think that could be useful but not entirely necessary. The page would have to be moved and not just redirected. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 17:40, 24 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I agree with adding the Seattle politician part to the title. JosefAbraham 23:31, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

I have boldly decided to go ahead with the page move and clean up of old links. This is as cut-and-dry of a case for a pagemove as anyone will ever see. SounderBruce 04:07, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Accomplishments section?

edit

It would perhaps be nice to add at least a few policy accomplishments to the page:

  • Introducing safe storage legislation to the Seattle City Council

Seattle City Clerk. City of Seattle. July 9, 2018. Retrieved February 24, 2019.

  • Leading efforts for a legal defense fund for immigrants

  • Giving direction to City of Seattle staff to throw out Alex Tsimerman from Seattle City Council for a year

I don't think a separate "accomplishments" section would be appropriate. The first two could go into the "career" section after they are written out some, but the last one is not supported by the source provided (in addition, her mention is trivial in the article and does not seem notable). Your link to your personal Youtube video is original research and I have removed it as per your warning at the AN3 here. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 18:22, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Education that needs clarification - alma mater vs education in infobox

edit

An earlier version of the infobox stated the WSU degree was a BA-degree. The Tu-Decides source says it was a business degree, but not BA or BS. Not sure what to cite.

Infobox summaries appear to prefer only the highest/one degree as "alma mater" and so we've overstuffed alma mater when education appears to be appropriate for multiple entries. Template:Infobox_person#Parameters Jwfowble (talk) 00:11, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I would be fine with changing it to "education". I don't think the infobox should include additional information about the type of degree if we don't know the specific type of bachelors degree. The main article text provides the additional information we have already. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 00:20, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
FYI, Jwfowble, I put in the year she began attending law school as you had wanted. I also corrected the date she started working for the Seattle mayor to 2014 as per the source. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 00:33, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
As best I can tell from the guidelines, they want us to leave it at just the JD if "alma mater" or we could expand it to all the schools under education. You seem to prefer lean infoboxes and I'd have no qualms about allowing the infobox to be larger, since people on mobile don't always scroll down much. Lorena often mentions her early struggles from being pretty poor growing up, so I don't think she hides that she started out on a community college branch campus and worked multiple jobs to eventually transfer to wsu. The citation said she moved to Seattle and then LA and worked as a document clerk before returning to Seattle U in the 2 years to start at SeattleU. A sentence to that effect could be worked in between the schools.
Egg on my face for typ-o on 2014/2015. Jwfowble (talk) 00:49, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
If you prefer to change it to education and keep all three schools in the infobox, that sounds good to me. Are you fine with leaving the reference to a business degree in the main text and not the infobox? That's what I thought was adding too much in the infobox. I think your suggested changes about her early working life sound good too. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 00:58, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yeah Wallyfromdilbert, "a business degree" is all the source said, so that sounds like main-text material. "Bachelor's" was a crawl-back from the BA that originally appeared in the infobox, but I couldn't find any specifics. I had added the hidden comment (when I figured out how those worked) in the hopes someone might know later on as well as some deference to whomever felt sure enough to add it in the first place. YVCC (the state dropped "community" out of all the community college names about a decade ago, but it was probably that when she went there), WSU, and Seattle U School of Law would all be fine education= entries for me. In that case, I'd just leave degrees out of the infobox and just list the schools, making sure the jd is in the maintext. To be honest, I'm not sure any references point out she's a democrat..... but I'm fairly confident in leaving that in the infobox. Jwfowble (talk) 01:23, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
All sounds good to me. She actually mentions being supported by the 43rd district Democrats on her website, and so I think that is fine to include [1]. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 01:40, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

City Council page probably more "official" than campaign website

edit

Wallyfromdilbert the infobox official website might be better directing to her city council website instead of her campaign website, which appears to be last updated in may 2017. Jwfowble (talk) 00:15, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

That sounds like a good idea. I think we should definitely include some website, and you make a good point on how to improve it. Do you think it would be better to call it "Council website" or some other name for more clarity? Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 00:24, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure I like the look of "website | Council website" in a box. "Official page" maybe? Adding "Seattle City Council page" or "Gonzalez - Seattle City Council" might look a bit longer than what you're going for. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jwfowble (talkcontribs) 01:52, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
What about "Official page" or "City Council page"? Or maybe "Official government page" for this link? I don't think we need to put her name in it but I'm fine with any of the other options. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 02:48, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sorry Wallyfromdilbert, I'm checking back here just now (you can ping me if you want to make sure I see something to respond). Either of those first two options would be fine with me. Also, hope I didn't cause any edit conflicts with the Bruce page as I was sandboxing that for a while to try to figure out if it handled redistricting. I can't see that it does.
FWIW, the tu-decides reference does suggest she lived in seattle for a year prior to 2002, which is why I went with the "since" language consistent with her council website. "After receiving a business degree there in 1999, she moved to Seattle for a year before heading to Los Angeles for several years. She gained experience as a corporate document clerk in both cities, but missed her family and headed back to Washington, where she graduated with honors from Seattle University's law school in 2005." Jwfowble (talk) 04:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
I made a small copyedit to make it flow a little smoother. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 04:22, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
yeah Wallyfromdilbert, I was trying to tweak too and we edit conflicted. I think I captured the best of what we both had. Didn't take issue with what you wrote, just trying to blend. Jwfowble (talk) 04:30, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
It looks good. Your change was better than mine. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 04:31, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

More in-depth article

edit

Apologies for the potential "Edit War" was unsure of how to use or even access the talk pages until now. I was trying to edit this to bring more depth to this article. I made some edits to my initial edits (including getting rid of all Social Media citations that weren't already on the page when I started editing.) which you can see in the difference between the Revision as of 03:59, 8 August 2019 and the Revision as of 05:36, 8 August 2019 version. What other citations where the issue? TrufForEveryone (talk) 06:06, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

@SounderBruce:@Wallyfromdilbert:, is anything from that version salvageable? in reading more about the WP:BLP is the other issue the citation in the court cases?TrufForEveryone (talk) 06:19, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Citation 12 in the document seems make the citation of court docs in citation 11 moot so if that's the issue seems simple to resolve.TrufForEveryone (talk) 06:32, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Worked on in my sandbox, I'm pretty sure everything is in compliance with WP:BLP now, will post updated version. Please let me know if there are any issues @Wallyfromdilbert:. :) TrufForEveryone (talk) 07:03, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Your changes are not appropriate. At least several sources you added do not mention González at all, and numerous others are not reliable sources, which should be independent secondary sources (not self-published). Much of your addition is WP:PROMOTION, and some of the content is simply unsupported. You are also making other problematic changes, and apparently not paying attention to the changes you are reverting, including style and formatting corrections. Editing Wikipedia requires a basic understanding of the core content policies, and editing a WP:BLP has more rules than other articles. You should take some time to review those policies a little better, especially before working on BLPs. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 13:30, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Former politician?

edit

Can I get a citation on her retirement from politics? Everytime I remove the "former" portion, some anon adds it back without explanation. NDACFan (talk) 16:44, 1 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
