Please excuse me, my Internet connexion has been quite intermittent tonight so I have been making silly mistakes that usually I would clean up at preview &c and indeed have tried to but it's a battle between myself and the Internet apparently. So, please, excuse and also correct any stupid spelling errors etc.

I've added links in the trivia section, one is deliberately trivial i.e. to show that it is still in common use; you may be able to put it better (not change the ref of course but say why it is there).

Now, Bagehot. I delelted "celebrated" (his article can stand for itself and that's POV) and deleted "first". I can think of many mathematicians/philosophers a lot further back that put it in plain English. P. J. O'Rourke I think in his book Eat the Rich (O'Rourke, P. J., Eat the Rich {{citation}}: |access-date= requires |url= (help) quotes G. D. Harding in about 1898 as giving the rules as (I am just quoting from memory here as my copy is on permanent loan i.e. stolen)

1. Use mathematics as a shorthand, and method of work.
2. Continue until it is done.
3. Translate into English, giving appropriate examples.
4. Burn the mathematics.

"Indeed", says O'Rourke, "I looked through the whole of The Wealth of Nations without finding a mathematical symbol". (Again, probably a misquote, but it is something like that.)

Elizabeth & Giles Calvert at the Sign of The Black Spread Eagle - Levellers, Diggers, Ranters, Quakers and many other Republican Radicals

My apologies - no time for other than prompting you to consider this : I am just casting around for the present number of Barclays' old headquarters - I am appalled that this page does not mention that Lombard Street was a hotbed of 17c political radicalism - and does not mention Barclays adopting the Calverts' street sign as its business symbol because when they first moved to 54 there were no street numbers - the address was " At the sign of the Black Spread Eagle."
