editOn checking http://www.lgat.tas.gov.au I found that the rural councils are not called "Municipality of Flinders" "Municipality of Southern Midlands" etc., but "Flinders Council" "Southern Midlands Council" etc. I thought I would have known this! Does anyone have any further insight on this - for example:
- "___ Council" refer to the organisation that looks after the area
- "Municipality of ___" refer to the land area itself
Or did all the names change recently? --Chuq 11:48, 11 May 2004 (UTC)
LGA names
editThis a proposed new naming convention for Tasmanian Local Government Areas. It should conform to what has been decided at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian places. It should be self explanatory. After the change, all cities (6) should be at "City of X", all others will be at "X Council". There doesn't seem to be any disambiguation at all required with these names, which is handy. The last three/four columns are redirects that should exist after the move to prevent redundant articles being created. -- Chuq 07:21, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- Let me ask you this, did the naming come from a directory somewhere? If so what did you use. I noticed that Clarence was refered to at [1] as Clarence City Council, but their website had City of Clarence as the name. I like the looks of what you did. should make things a whole lot less ambigous! SauliH 08:25, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- I used the names on the official sites, all of which are linked from http://www.lgat.tas.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=225 . The only names which were different were the six city councils, most of which have "X City Council" on their official site, but are also commonly known as "City of X" (in fact I had already moved Hobart, Glenorchy and Clarence before I did this table). -- Chuq 08:41, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- I would support your proposed moves and redirect links. It will improve these pages immensely.SauliH 15:12, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- Just back after a break - hadnt looked at this page - and did the link to the West Coast Council - hope I havent suffed anything up! I find I have a real problem with the 'Municipality of something I dont think I ever remember seeing it on any of the materials to do with west coast tassie - SatuSuro 14:55, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- As a redirect link the mun of could be useful. It may never get used, but a user looking for those LGA's will find if they ever try. SauliH 21:18, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Mergers and History
editJust thoughts. Perhaps something should be included about the proposals to merge councils?? Also I know that come councils are allready the result of previous mergers. Perhaps this should be included? This made me think if anyone was a history buff maybe some history of local governmetn in tasmania could be good? I dont know much in this area so probably won't contribute but thought this stuff would be interesting?--TinTin (talk) 03:42, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Major towns and suburbs
editIn the section ""Towns and suburbs of council areas" the phrase: "The following is a list of councils areas grouped by region, and the major towns and suburbs within each LGA" appears. Having just realised that, if I continue to add non-major localities to this article the purpose of the above will be lost, I have decided to desist from that practice forthwith.
