Districts edit

The article refers to 196 new district councils, but districts as I know them were not created until 1975. Was there a different kind of district pre 1975? Laurel Bush 12:27, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

They are basically area committes of the county councils, as I understand it. No separate elections. Lozleader can tell you more, no doubt. Morwen - Talk 12:27, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Which is, perhaps, why parish boundaries survived on OS maps until the era of local government regions? Laurel Bush 12:44, 26 January 2006 (UTC).Reply

Yes. I would imagine they were used for creating electoral districts and parliamentary constituencies, too. Morwen - Talk 12:58, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Parishes must have had some sort of vestigial existence post 1930 - For instance the 1975 Perth and Kinross District was defined as

"(1) The County of Kinross, (2) the parish of Kettins from the district of Monifieth, in the County of Angus and (3) the following parts of the County of Perth: the burghs of [list of burghs snipped], the districts of Central (except the parish of Muckhart), Eastern, Highland and Perth (except the electoral district of Longforgan), and the electoral division of Ardoch in the Western district"

From Parish:

In Scotland, civil parishes existed until 1975. They were administered by parochial boards until 1894, when elected parish councils were formed. In 1930 the parish councils were dissolved, but the parishes themselves were grouped in districts and continued to exist for statistical and boundary purposes. The parishes were finally abolished on the reorganisation of local government in Scotland in 1975.

No reference to district councils. I guess there were areas known as, or officially called, districts of parishes. Laurel Bush 11:27, 27 January 2006 (UTC).Reply

There were indeed entities known as "District Councils" from 1930 -1975. They were created by sections 25 and 26 of the 1929 Act.
Here are a couple of references to pre 1975 DCs: [1] [2] This one tells a bit about what they were and did: [3]
