Regarding the associated jpg file describing the descendants of John Carter - it's not clear if the column to the right is meant to indicate the book in which the characters were initially introduced, or the book in which the characters were married - but if it is supposed to show when they were married (and thus able to produce offspring), then the union of Thuvia and Carthoris should be listed in volume 4 (Thuvia, Maid of Mars) and not volume 2 (The Gods of Mars).
The obvious meaning is the book in which the characters were initially introduced, as indicated by the column heading "Book of First Appearance". I don't see how that could be misconstrued to mean "Book in Which Married". The book in which both Thuvia and Carthoris were first introduced is correctly shown as volume 2 (The Gods of Mars).
