Small things

Coming here from DYK. Saw a few things I had questions about:

  • British English is used throughout the article but there are a few uses of -ize (anaesthetize, euthanize, organize, organization) – being from across the pond, I know -ize is not necessarily wrong, but wanted to be sure they were intentional.
  • Antivivisection and anti-vivisection are both used – I'd suggest settling on one form
  • From the lead, "they infiltrated the vivisection in University College London of a brown terrier dog" – would they have infiltrated the class or the vivisection?
  • Also from the lead, "at a time when women could not be admitted as lawyers in the UK because not regarded as persons" – phrasing struck me as awkward.
  • The Writing and activism/Shambles of Science section starts of with a "they" and a women's college, which of course refer to the London School of Medicine for Women, Lind af Hageby and Schartau – Consider naming them (again) at the beginning of the section.
  • This sentence – "This combined with a private income from her family enabled her to pursue her political activism, writing and travelling around the world to deliver lectures, first in opposition to child labour and prostitution, then in support of women's emancipation, and later animal rights." maybe could be broken up or use some different punctuation.

Mostly fiddly things. I didn't consider any of these holding up a DYK, but might be items to consider should you bring this to GA/R. Overall, great article. Gobōnobo + c 23:01, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, Gobonobo, these are good points; I'll do an edit later (and feel free to edit it yourself, of course). As for -ize, that's deliberate. It's my own small part in trying to keep Oxford spelling alive. We have a template for it, which I'll try to find for the talk page. :) SlimVirgin (talk) 22:16, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I've removed the point about women being persons until I've worked out how to phrase it better. In looking around for more sources, I discovered this gem, a discussion in the House of Lords in 1918 about women becoming solicitors. This objection from the Earl of Halsbury, I believe this one -- Hardinge Giffard, 1st Earl of Halsbury:

I am sorry to be obliged to state any objection which seems to be an objection merely on the ground of sex, but it is an objection. A woman has no recognition of any side but her own. If there is one thing more than another which is desirable in the commencement of litigation it is that you should avoid litigation if you can, and many and many a time in my own experience I have seen litigation avoided by judicious correspondence, and this can only be done by recognising that there is another side to the question, and that possibly a little modification on one side or the other would avoid litigation altogether. With the greatest respect for the sex, I must say that in my experience it is not easy to get a woman to understand that there may be another side than her own, and the extreme danger is that the correspondence which precedes litigation may sometimes end in producing an angrier spirit.

"the days of Russell"

Which barrister Russell was being refered to? A link would make this point clear.--Wetman (talk) 19:28, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

I've repeated the link to his name in the lead that was further down in the article. SlimVirgin (talk) 06:48, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society

"'Lind af Hageby co-founded the Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society (ADAVS) in 1903 with the Duchess of Hamilton, with a shop and office at 170 Picadilly, London. As part of its, Lind af Hageby drafted a petition in or around 1906 ...". As part of its what? George Ponderevo (talk) 18:46, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

As part of its work -- thanks for spotting it; fixed now. SlimVirgin (talk) 06:56, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
