My problems with the stub section are:

"well-heeled leftists were sending their kids there for a proper socialist indoctrination..."

This is hardline right-wing ideological commentary which is entirely partisan. This entire phrase should be removed fr. the passage. Richard 08:41, 26 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

good thing it was. Who the hell said that? And what is wrong with socialism. I suspect that the person who said "well-heeled leftists were sending their kids there for a proper socialist indoctrination..." was an un-educated person who could be easily influenced by such stupid concepts. By the way, look at my comments on the 'history' tab of this page. Did you know that i attended this school from 1999 to 2003? the article needs to be expanded with good facts, evidence, and official opinion, as well as with sound material. Organization

edit

I propose to divide the article into these sections: founding, history, current, with maybe sections on famous alumni and famous faculty. Something also needs to be added on how the school functioned as a haven for blacklisted individuals. kosboot (talk) 21:14, 14 December 2007 (UTC) -- class of 1974.Reply

Relationship with High School

edit

When I attended the school in the 1960s-70s, it was seen as one school. You did not need to take any tests to get into the high school (there was no middle school at that time). So I wonder whether it is wise to have two separate articles on the lower school and the high school. Just as the actual institution exists as one institution, so too should the article be a single article with redirects pointing to the appropriate place. kosboot (talk) 14:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just the facts ma'am

edit

I don't agree with the tone of the article. It seems to be a rather celebratory article. Compare it with an ordinary school Princess Anne High School or with another famous private school Phillips Exeter Academy and you'll see the difference. V. Joe (talk) 20:28, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rewrite & redacted section

edit

I substantially rewrote the article to emphasis facts, but also to make it more grammatically correct and to give it a smoother feel. I also redacted this section because it sounds like something out of a student handbook (blah).

LREI believes in progressive education. Much of the students' learning is done through experimentation, projects, and field trips, as opposed to the more traditional direct instruction. As a further example, high-school students have art every day. (These art classes include Dance, Drama, Music, Digital Film making, Photography, Studio, and Graphic Arts).

The Lower East Side companion school from 1944 to 1970 was Downtown Community School (DCS), whose alumni include the writers Peter Manso, Ann Lauterbach, and Richard Kostelanetz. Its director from 1951 to its dissolution was Norman Studer.

Their 2004 handbook states: "The school retains its historic commitment to social justice and inclusion. Students are encouraged to become involved in struggles for social justice ... as alumni tell stories of concerts given by Pete Seeger singing about social and racial justice, future alumni will remember the programs and discussions sponsored by today's Multicultural Committee and Lesbian and Gay Issues Group."

http://nycprivateschoolsblog.com/ is not a reliable source—it's a blog with no hallmarks of editorial quality, including editorial policy, fact-checking, or even author bylines. The school website—a primary source—is a better source for the college matriculation info. czar 08:14, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
