Total number of volcanoes in Chile

edit
  • This list shows only 141 volcanoes in Chile, while other references talk about more than 2900 of them (see http://www.emol.com/especiales/volcanes/index.htm). So who is right? 3000 volcanoes would meen one every 1500 meters of longitudinal territory (if uniformly distributed along Chile) which is scary... Sergio Mendoza
  • Reuters AlerNet mentions the following: "Chile's chain of about 2,000 volcanoes is the world's second-largest after Indonesia. Some 50 to 60 are on record as having erupted, and 500 are potentially active". Unfortunately the statement is unreferenced. Arjuno (talk 14:59, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merge of lists

edit

I am going to merge the 5 lists of this article to a long sortable list. Then, the reader can order the list acc. to name, shape and elevation.

The 5. list is commented out and will be distributed to the right place.

The location north, south, pacific, etc would be made by the background color of the volcano record.

Later, the coordinates have to be transformed to only deg|min|sec or to only decimal figures to get an exact ordered list acc. to latitude.

This disposition allows a better control about the list: e.g.: now the Volcano "Negrillar" is twice in the list.

Some better idea?. --Best regards, KS (wat?) 14:19, 7 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think the merger is a bad idea. A distinction into geographical groups like in List of volcanoes in Indonesia (not it is a featured list) is preferable in my opinion since it is mucho more reader friendly than "bulk data list". Dentren | Talk 18:59, 17 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
The geographical groups are given through the latitude. --92.227.160.157 (talk) 10:18, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup and return to pre-merge layout

edit

As of June 5 2015 this article is unreadable. It has very little prose and context and the selection of volcanoes is arbitrary. Further on the lists were merged without consensus (se older comments above). I will be finxing this page to the pre-unilateral-merged layout trying to not lose valuable information that was added after that.

Some changes to be intruduced (reverted back in some cases are):

  • Return to pre-merge layout that allows things to be more readable (see List of volcanoes in Indonesia for what a good list is).
  • Remove OVDAs surveillance column. Wikipedia is no substitute for ONEMIs and OVDAS webpage. OVDAS monitoring change too often to keep things updated. One single link to these institution at the bottom of the page should be enough. Focus should be on the volcanoes from a natural science and geographical point of view not on the activities of OVDAS on them.
  • Remove other names. Nearly all volcanoes in Chile have well established names. It is not reasonable to have column just for the the volcanoes that might have ambiguous names. Footnotes are an alternative in such cases.
  • Establish critera for volcanoes to be included. I propose:
  • Only active or dormant (Holocene), excluding extinct. There far to many extinct volcanoes and they are difficult to identify.
  • Only arc, back-arc or hotspot volcanoes. Volcanoes in mid-ocean ridges are far to many and unknown.
  • Exclude parasitic cones as these belong to larger volcanoes that are more well known.
  • Smaller eruptive centra should be treated in groups rather than as individual cones (if they occur in groups).
