Map could be nice, found http://www.geog.ubc.ca/courses/geob370/students/class06/global/images/cities2000.jpg but it's already a bit old — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.76.49.12 (talk) 04:18, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Verify listings edit

Can someone please verify that each city in this set of lists is correct? I've noticed some entries where a city or town's population has not reached 100,000 according to their Wikipedia pages and respective sources for each. 2601:589:8000:2ED0:D91D:5B79:7704:4854 (talk) 00:22, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Should lists by city name have a column for population? edit

Related to this, it is possible to verify that each city has over 100,000 inhabitants by including a column to show the populations of each city. I only want this to happen for the lists by city, as I already see some lists by country already using this. Should we include such a column in lists by city name? (And yes, this is the same user from the previous IP speaking. My IP is dynamic.) 2601:589:8000:2ED0:D584:1480:F2CA:606E (talk) 22:03, 30 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Idea: replace 2 pages of multiple sub pages by one huge table? edit

Currently we have 2 lists (by city name and by cities country name) each containing many sub pages of each starting letter. I suggest we substitute all of it by one huge table. (or one not so huge table per country, but on one wiki page, to be able to use full text search.) I would be interested in columns

city name country state geo location population population data source and date

Is there any way to obtain / sync the data from the cities pages (or the city lists per country pages e.g. List of cities in Afghanistan) instead of redundantly storing it here? I found out that in the article about Bern the population data is taken from a database, what looks quite nice to me, (see Template:Infobox_Swiss_town). In such a list, I would not be too strict if there a few cities below the 100000 inhabitants requirement in it. tokes 03:15, 10 February 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tokes (talkcontribs)

@Tokes: I would advise also cross-posting this onto both WT:CITIES and WT:GEOGRAPHY as well. Practically no one watches these pages from my personal experiences, and something like this can definitely use input from these WikiProjects. I, however, will remain neutral on the matter for now. However, I will add that as the creator of the template for the introductory line of all 35 of these pages, I am unopposed to merging the contents of the template into this page in the event that this merge proposal passes. Jalen D. Folf (talk) 03:43, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

New category for all pages with Infobox settlement template edit

Can we add a new category for all pages with {{Infobox settlement}} template? It can be used either separately or replace this list

China edit

How come the UN doesn't have city listings for China? Because of that, a number of cities in China are missing from this list.

Title cleanup edit

The titles of these "subpages" should really be cleaned up. Subpages don't exist in mainspace, so it should use brackets instead (eg "… (cities: A)" or "… countries: L–P" instead of "…/cityname: A" (which is incorrect spelling anyway) and "…/country: L-M-N-O-P").  Nixinova  T  C   07:02, 21 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

List by city names edit

I don’t know if it’s the right place to ask this but why is the list sorted by city names gone? It’s being redirected to this page? The user JalenFolf did this. But why? I don’t get it? It was really useful and now it’s not accessible. 2A02:908:C38:45E0:94FC:2BFF:3AF:E430 (talk)

Hi IP. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cities#List of towns and cities with 100,000 or more inhabitants. The lists were very awkward for comparisons as some key information for verification was missing. Jalen Folf (talk) 14:03, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Clarification edit

Is this measured by city proper?

If so, I'm going to update and properly format these pages in accordance with the UN 2016 list: 8. Population of capital cities and cities of 100 000 or more inhabitants: latest available year, 1997 - 2016. —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 18:53, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

And strangely: the UN document is missing many of the numbers in the city proper column, so I don't know where these numbers came from. Can anyone explain? —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 18:56, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
