The Devil Went Down to Jamaica? edit

I thought this song was by Weird Al Yankovic, but I can't find it anywhere in his Wiki pages? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.170.253.127 (talk) 00:25, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's actually mentioned on The Not Al List. Misattributed to Weird Al. --Esanchez(Talk 2 me or Sign here) 00:28, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

That link is no longer working. I am going to update it to http://www.com-www.com/weirdal/notbyal.html. CodeCarpenter (talk) 15:52, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yoda edit

I always thought it was a dead-on parody of "Lola" by The Kinks. I'm going to change it for now. (It's really bad form to do this but I'll cite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoda_(song) at least to justify it here) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 169.236.39.85 (talk) 20:35, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

It is a parody of Lola. Somebody changed it, then an attempt was made to correct it, and then it was reverted to before this all started. -- BullWikiWinkle 23:46, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Finished? edit

145 songs? Is it finally complete?

Well, it does seem to be missing his concert-only songs, such as the pizza-delivery parody of "My heart will go on," and I don't see any of his pre-album works, such as "School Cafeteria" here, either. --Measure July 7, 2005 02:45 (UTC)

Was that pizza-delivery really concert-only? I seem to remember a similar song appearing on the Simpsons in his guest appearance. --maru (talk) contribs 03:37, 27 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • I know, this list is purely the songs off his officially released albums -- Ianblair23 7 July 2005 03:02 (UTC)
    • Would it be so bad to include the other songs? Here's a more complete list of all al's recorded songs: http://www.weirdal.com/rcdgdate.htm although even this leaves out his concert-only stuff.--Measure July 7, 2005 18:51 (UTC)

Trigger Happy edit

Isn't "Trigger Happy" a parody of a Beach Boys song? If it is unverified whether it's original or cover, just put in (unverified). --SuperDude 16:57, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I believe it's original, but clearly a tribute to their style. The main article "Weird Al" Yankovic supports that view. I added the info to the list. Rl 17:23, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Pretty Fly... for a What? edit

Is it 'Pretty Fly for a Jedi', or 'Pretty Fly for a Rabbi'?

Rabbi. It's the third track on his 1999 alubm Running with Scissors. Al's two Star Wars songs are called "Yoda" (a parody of "Lola") and "The Saga Begins", (a parody of "American Pie"). As far as I know, to date no one (Al or otherwise) has recorded a song called "Pretty Fly (for a Jedi)", although you can find some random people who have written such a song [1], and Al has stated in interviews that he did at one point consider writing "The Saga Begins" to the tune of "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)" and calling it "Pretty Fly (for a Jedi)", but later decided against it [2]. -- Tyler 16:54, 17 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I have a video featuring footage of Thumb Wars set to "Pretty Fly (For a Jedi)", which is attributed to Al. Weird Al did not perform the song. It doesn't even sound like him.PrometheusX303 01:35, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

A Complicated Song edit

About that parody on Avril Lavigne's Complicated song - isn't it called Constipated? I could be mistaken.

The official title as given on the CD is "A Complicated Song". "Constipated" sounds like an mp3 mislabelling. - Tyler 17:21, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Constipated" is funnier. -71.188.51.58 (talk) 13:29, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Let's bomb Iraq edit

What about "Let's bomb Iraq" ? Many lyrics websites list it as a Yankovic song... --Steven Fruitsmaak 21:15, 21 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, only the songs on the list/s are by Al, the rest, it's safe to assume, are misattributions. 129.180.1.214 13:55, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The song you're thinking of is called "Bomb Iran" and it's by The Capitol Steps. It's a parody of "Barbara Ann" by the Beach Boys 12.226.28.31 01:22, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, I'm in possession of an old MP3 that parodies Barbara Ann but is clearly about Iraq, not Iran. The intro references Clinton's re-election and Saddam Hussein ("So-Damn Insane.") While its ID3 tags claims the artist is Weird Al, I wouldn't be surprised if The Capitol Steps did both at different times. 73.254.204.62 (talk) 04:25, 18 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

It's not bomb iran if you search for 'I get knocked down parody weird al ' the first video that comes up is a song containing lyrics including 'let's hunt him down, and shoot him in the head . And bomb iraq to the ground '. It sounds a lot like weird al but the quality is piss poor making me think it's not actually him . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.233.32.173 (talk) 07:31, 7 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Misattributed edit

Not sure I see the point in this section. Now if there was a song or three that it was extremely commonly (in general, not just in file-sharing circles) misattributed to Al, I could see listing it. But most of the songs on the list sound NOTHING like Al, and anyone who knows the slightest thing about him (other than the fact he writes parodies) is not going to confuse him with the author. Specifically, most of these songs are pretty 'lowbrow' and Al usually doesn't stoop there. I'd suggest removing this section entirely -- as it has the potential to grow to encompass any parody that gets played on the radio or circulated on the internet...--Rehcsif 20:04, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Seconded. --Big gun 16:25, 26 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, I was WP:BOLD and removed the list, replacing it with a paragraph documenting the phenomenon, and linking to the "Not Al Page" which was much more complete anyway. I hope this is acceptable. --Rehcsif 18:47, 26 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not Al Songs edit

If you've ever gone to Al's website, on the links page is a site called "The Not Al Songs" page. It's a list comprised by a few people who are dedicated to attributing songs to the correct artist, rather than just labeling all parodies to Al.

Running Times? edit

Is it possible to also add the running times onto these? I'd like to know about them. Also, shouldn't there be a alternative cronological list?-Chwoka

Really silly, but it is relevant... possibly edit

X number of years ago, I remember that there was a Sabrina: The Animated Series cartoon on when I was nearby, and the main characters become rock stars and sang some song over and over. I recall that some way through the episode, a Weird Al-esque version of the very same song was sung and attributed (in the cartoon) to Weird Al himself (with one of the characters commenting that you know you're famous when Weird Al writes a parody of your song.) I don't remember the details well, but does anyone know what I'm talking about, or if this was this done by the real Weird Al or an imitator? --HeroicJay 07:18, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

According to both IMDB [3] and Wikipedia (see Sabrina: The Animated Series), that was an actual cameo by Weird Al himself. —TheMuuj Talk 21:30, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Didn't Al parody the Prodigy's 'Firestarter' in one of the epsodes of 'Wierd Al Show'. I think his version was called 'Stupid Hair Cut'.

Blunderful Word edit

My wife has a demo tape with a song called "Blunderful World" which I think may be Al. It's a parody of What A Wonderful Worldby [[Louis Armstrong]. Here is a sample of the lyrics;

The radiation Clouds are so Horrid In The Sky
Tumors on the Faces, Of Victims Who Survived
See them fighting for food, Skin Turning Blue
They Died of Starvation, and soon you will to
I see babies die, watching them decompose
They'll hurt much more, than I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a blunderful world

Is this Al? Should we list this song? --Fernwood 03:01, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

No it isn't Al, and according to a Google search for the term 'blunderful world weird al' there isn't even anything remotely similar to the above. "Disagreement"/Peter and the Wolf edit

I've noticed that this article and the album articles have reached a "disagreement". For example, on this page, Weasel Stomping Day is called "Original", while on Straight Outta Lynwood, it's called a "Style parody of 1960s Christmas songs". Also, on this page, Fun Zone is called "Original", but on UHF - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Other Stuff, it is a "Style parody of "Blow Up" by Devo". And, on this page, UHF is "Original", but on UHF - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Other Stuff, it is called a "Style parody of "State of Shock" by The Jacksons", and on The TV Album, it is called a "Style parody of TV show themes". What are they really parodying?

And, would it be OK to put that all tracks from Peter and the Wolf are a style parody of "The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saëns? Because they basicly are. -71.188.51.58 (talk) 15:12, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

One More Minute influences? edit

Does anybody else feel that "One More Minute" could be a style parody of The Platters - or at least inspired by their song The Great Pretender? I honestly can't listen to the song without immediately thinking of One More Minute. How much of a consensus would be needed for a "style parody" to appear next to a song? 98.114.122.58 (talk) 17:34, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Haha I feel exactly the same! Whenever I hear The Great Pretender, I automatically think of One More Minute. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.31.141.152 (talk) 19:13, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

One More Minute is in the style of 1950's doo wop and takes influences from a lot of doo wop artists, including but not limited to the Platters. The video was in the style of Elvis Presley's early performances. Also, Truck Drvin' Song is clearly in the style of Johnny Cash. Why everyone else hears C.W. McCall is beyond comprehension.76.29.225.28 (talk) 03:28, 15 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Other commercially available songs edit

Looking at recent edits to the page, I have noticed many are to the growing 'Other commercially available songs' section. I feel it would be worth developing that list into a table, similar to the one in the main article section. This would allow further details of the contained songs to be included, such as 'Homer & Marge' being a direct parody of 'Jack & Diane' by John Mellencamp, and Hey, Hey, We're the Monks' including elements of 'Hey Hey We're The Monkees' by The Monkees. What do other editors think? --Jonie148 (talk) 11:28, 26 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

"Mr. Popeil" edit

I know that apparently a source was found to state that "Mr. Popeil" is in the style of "Rock Lobster" (because that's the B-52s most popular song), but in fact the song most closely resembles another B-52's track called "There is a Moon in the Sky." Submersible (talk) 00:33, 5 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

The source actually says "Yes, "Mr. Popeil" is meant to sound like the B52's. A lot of my originals are intentionally derivative of other groups (although not enough to infringe on their copyright!") It's an original in the style of the B-52s, not a parody of a specific song. --tronvillain (talk) 14:36, 5 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Inclusion of concert-specific cover songs edit

As I understand it, on the current tours, Al does one song that is not history as a straight up cover, though typically including the accordion as one of the parts. This is a unique song, not duplicated at other tour stops, and these aren't released at all.

I find it troubling that they are being added to the list here because they 1) aren't recorded and 2) really aren't his songs nor his novel take on the songs. And outside of selected concern reviews, the only way to source these are to setlist notes, which are not normally published in reliable sources. We should not include these. His other concert-but-not-recorded staples are fine, those frequently are discussed. --Masem (t) 00:42, 22 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Masem: Although I supported an IP editor in including such a song a few revisions ago, I have no strong feelings either way on this matter. I do however think it is important to reach a consensus. From my perspective, the key concern here is to ensure that this section doesn't enter the realm of WP:Trivia. These guidelines suggest that the boundary line concerns "being selective", so I wonder where we would draw the line with the songs on this list. Should Prince's '1999' stay, since Yankovic has covered that multiple times, and it's listed in the songography? (n.b. I will note that as far as I can tell, the songography hasn't been updated for a few years, so a song's/cover's inclusion in it may not be the best selection criterion) Two solutions that come to mind would be to: a) Reword the lead sentence of the section to make it clearer which songs should be included b) Add a hidden text to the start of the section like so: . --Jonie148 (talk) 07:22, 22 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Well, this helps settle the issue: AVClub points to the video that WAY just posted [4] that provides all 77 songs they covered during that tour. That's the source we needed. --Masem (t) 16:45, 15 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
