Talk:List of sites and peoples visited by the Hernando de Soto Expedition

A list edit

I started this list because all of the different sites associated with de Soto expedition (and there are quit a few, but could be more) were in no way linked to each other, nor to much of anything else but local state history lists. I was only able to find each of these by typing in the individual name from a map, and since there are so many variant spellings, even this took me awhile. Close to half of the names on the list are stubs, and could use some expansion and work, although a few of the ones in Tennessee are very well done, kudos to the contributor! I'm working on 3 to 5 maps to use for the different legs of the journey and already have 2 of them up, one for the whole journey, and one for leg 2(just above Apalachee to Mabila).Heironymous Rowe (talk) 05:16, 20 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

A list of the names of places named by members of the de Soto expedition compiled from four original sources begins on page 499 of The De Soto Chronicles: the Expedition of Hernando de Soto to North America in 1539-1543, by Lawrence A. Clayton, Vernon James Knight, Jr., and Edward C. Moore, editors. It is on line here. That list of Indian Proper names in the Four Narratives is copied from the Final Report of the United States De Soto Expedition Commission, so the list and its ordering is in the public domain. Unfortunately, the four narratives do not always agree on spelling and order, and even how many places were visited. We do need reliable secondary sources to interpret where those places were on a modern map. When I get time, I'll work on this. -- Donald Albury 11:21, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, BTW, why is Narváez expedition#Bay of Horses on this list? -- Donald Albury 11:21, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
A source for the journey through Florida would be Hernando de Soto and the Indians of Florida by Jerald T. Milanich and Charles Hudson. That is available in my local public library, so if no one else gets to it, I can eventually. -- Donald Albury 11:33, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Rename edit

I might be a nice idea to rename the article to "Hernando de Soto Expedition". It's WP:CONCISE and makes the list easier to transform into a fully fledged article. - HyperGaruda (talk) 19:00, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
