Please remove the unsourced and WP:BLP violating claim that Hu Wanlin is a serial killer with 146 proven victims. It is quite clear in WP's own article Hu Wanlin and the sources that it cites that the subject listed here as a "notable serial killer" was never convicted or proven to be such; and so cannot and should not be included in this list. There is no reliable source cited on this page to prove the claim for inclusion. There are endless amounts of reliable sources to back the claim that the subject "was thought to have murdered"; but was not convicted of any crime related to such claim. Vote: Remove & Semi-protect. Definition of proven victims?

I have created a page for German serial killer Niels Högel. He was convicted of killing 6 patients and confessed to 30 murders but a police investigation concluded today that he killed at least 90 patients (41 other deaths still under investigation). They said Högel confessed to some murders but in most of cases he could not remember specific details though he did not deny being responsible for their deaths. How should we define proven victims in the list? 90 seems certain but it appears there won't be a new trial as he was already sentenced to life in prison. Should we keep it at 6 or is 90 acceptable, with 131 as the number of possible victims?Johndavies837 (talk) 18:38, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

The subject Hu Wanlin does not belong in this article; as can be clearly seen at his WP page. No reliable source was cited here to back the claim that he is / was a "serial killer"; per BLP violation policy "Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion") the content has been removed. All sources referencing the subject states the same claim: "thought to be" or "thought to have"; but was never convicted of any crime related to the arrest to be labeled a "serial killer" here. @Maineartists: he had been added back again in this edit yet again claiming 146 confirmed victims. I have checked the Google Chrome translated verions of both sources provided, and although there seems to have been a 2013 death involving him neither source seems to be very specific about whether the case had concluded or what the charge or outcome was. Of course it goes without saying even if he was convicted of that one murder, that still would not make him a proven serial killer and thus eligible for inclusion. I suggest adding Paul Tibbets and Charles Sweeney to the list of not included but mentioned sentence. I believe this addition has merit because no other single people have had unequivocal responsibility for the mass murder of so many people as direct, intentional and unapologetic results of their actions.

Both parties have their own wikipedia pages as mentioned below.

This Article Should Include More Murders

Being that the number of victims is the primary measure in this article, the article should include both Pacific Air Lines Flight 773 (Francisco Gonzales, 44 killed) and Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 1771 (David Burke, 43 killed). Both of these occurred in the USA and were intentional and deliberate large-scale acts of murder, involving a firearm, caused by one criminal individual. Add Elizabeth Báthory (possibly one of the most prolific serial killers). I believe her confirmed kills were zero as some people believe she was framed, but one of her servants claimed to find a list of over 600 victims.

Add H. H. Holmes (one of the most well known serial killers whose identity is known). He was convicted of killing one (but was proven to kill at approximately 9) he might have killed anywhere from 20 to 200 and confessed to killing over 20 (but some were still alive, and he constantly changed it to confuse everybody) BenjaminClaudee (talk) 22:46, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Dandupalya Gang

The Dandupalya gang consisting of ten men and one woman were convicted of 14 murders. The gang operated mostly in Bangalore-India. They would murder their victims and then indulge in necrophilia. The modus operandi was the woman member would generally knock on doors and ask for a drink of water. When the householder went inside to fetch a glass of water, the gand would barge in and carry out their operations. They generally targeted housewives.

About M. Jaishankar's section

At the time of this writing, M. Jaishankar's section within this article says that he "is now kept under heavy security measures". However, according to M. Jaishankar's article (at the time of this writing), he died February 27, 2018. If he has died, I am pretty sure that he isn't being kept under "heavy security measures" any more. Pedro Alonso Lopez shown as #2 with 110 confirmed victims: That number is misleading at best as only 57 victims have ever been confirmed, the rest are assumed. I think that at least a notation of this fact is required.

Can Steven Massof be removed from the "Medical professionals" list? The article lists him with "100+" proven victims, but the evidence is just that he claimed in court to have killed 100 people. I'm also not sure he meets the definition of a serial killer -- his killings were done as a worker at the Kermit Gosnell clinic. So he acted under some kind of instructions, and his killings were not really distinct events. Haunted Spy, regarding your recent additions, make sure that all of the entries are actually about serial killers. Killing three or more people does not automatically make one a serial killer. Hi, as the article is protected I'd like to suggest some edits to the lead:

  • the definition of three or more people is not universal, some authorities including the FBI set it at two, others at four. Nor I think does anyone specifically set three people and two events as the minimum? I suggest the following first sentence:
    "A serial killer is a multiple murderer who kills in separate events over a period of time, for primarily psychological reasons."
  • "he/she" is an unnecessary formulation and I suggest it be replaced with singular they.
  • "and/or" is another unnecessary formulation (WP:ANDOR) and I think just "and" would work in this case.
  • "The complex nature of serial killers, their crimes, discrepancies caused by geographic location and/or time, and the investigations related to these persons results in difficulties in organization and ranking." is on the whole a very confusing sentence. I'm not even really sure what reason it's trying to give for organization and ranking being difficult. I suggest as a possible rewording:
    "Organization and ranking of serial killings is made difficult by the complex nature of serial killers, and incomplete knowledge of the full extent of many killers' crimes"
  • "definitely" doesn't need to be in bold face.

Tronvillain and I have addressed the IP at Talk:Serial killer. Like I stated there, the sources clearly state that "three or more" is the standard. And Wikipedia commonly leads with the most common definition first. That is WP:Due. Wikipedia usually commits to a definition, regardless of a minority definition also existing. The minority definition gets its due, but not before the most common definition. The sources don't define "serial killer" in the vague way you are defining it. They do not state "A serial killer is a type of multiple murderer, distinguished by their crimes occurring sporadically over a period of months or years (in contrast to a mass murderer who kills many people at once in a single place, and a spree killer who kills many people in a short period of time but in several places)." And the reason they don't is because simply having murdered multiple people does not make one a serial killer. The baseline exists for the reason that the article states, and so does the important "abnormal psychological gratification" and "cooling off period" aspect (which the lead currently words as "a significant period of time between [the murders]"). The FBI can do what it wants (although an editor in the RfC stated that the FBI also uses the "three or more" criteria, and I'd need to check the most recent way the FBI defines the term), but the FBI is the outlier or rather significant minority in this case (as made clear by the sources noting what most experts agree on for the definition). The FBI is also United States-centric. But then again, it seems that most research on serial killers has taken place in the United States.
Guideline changes can be easily made, though. I'm familiar with the editor focusing on the WP:ANDOR guideline. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 18:27, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Not too long ago, ex-nurse Niels Högel admitted to killing at least 100 of his patients, and the victim count could even be higher, which is still under investigation. I ust admit that the lead section of that article seems a little self-contradictory:
"Högel has confessed to killing 30 patients but in 2017 a police investigation concluded that he was responsible for at least 90 deaths.[2] In November 2017, German prosecutors said that the number of victims was at least 106,[3] with Högel admitting, in October 2018, to murdering 100 patients."

He was asked if the allegations, that he killed at least 100 people, were "mostly true" ('größtenteils wahr") and he simply answered with "Yes". So he did not confess an exact number (which is might not know at all), but if 100+ is "mostly" true, we can assume that is is at least 90 or so. Keep in mind that the word "mostly" did not come from him, but from the judge. So "mostly" can also include "100% true". The number 30 comes from the 30 cases that the first day of the court hearing was about. The other cases will just be "for the record" as he already would get the maximum possible sentence if convicted for 30 murders. In Germany we do not have something like 600 years prison sentence. Life long is the maximum. From thoses 30 cases on the first days he admitted 14. As he already was convited of 6 murders, that brings the number already to 20 that were explicitly proven. I'd agree that it is normal practice to allow cases to "remain on file," if there no perceived benefit in prosecuting the, particularly when the maximum sentence for that crime is likely to be imposed. So these additional to 30 may well be never be fully investigated. On January 12-13, 1977, Johnny Lee Thornton was a Specialist 4 in the United States Army, assigned to the 463rd Military Police Company, and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Thornton was on active duty as a member of the United States Army, and was working as a military policeman assigned to the Game Warden Section of the Provost Marshal Office at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Thornton's duties consisted of the random and selected patrolling of Fort Leonard Wood. Thornton checked permits, assisted sportsmen, and patrolled for fish and game violators, poachers, and trespassers. He was also to search for illegal trash dumping; the destruction, dumping or cutting of trees; and the destruction of wildlife food plots.

Thornton's work involved a minimal amount of supervision and a high degree of professional competence. In addition to his game and wildlife duties set out above Thornton also had authority to arrest military personnel and to detain civilians for any suspected crimes and could make such arrests or detention on any and all parts of the military base. It was Army policy that the detention of civilians for suspected crimes be limited to only such time necessary to release a civilian to federal or state law enforcement officials. EQUIPMENT: On the evening of January 12, 1977, Thornton reported for duty and was issued several items of United States Army equipment. He was issued a four-wheel drive military police jeep which was utilized by Thornton while he was on duty on January 12-13, 1977. The vehicle was clearly marked as a military police vehicle and Thornton was in full military uniform at all times during this period. He was also issued a U. S. Army 45-calibre pistol, several rounds of ammunition, two pairs of military police handcuffs and one military police badge. It was not unusual for someone acting in Thornton's capacity to check out two pairs of handcuffs or several rounds of ammunition before going on duty.

DETAILS: While on duty on the evening of January 12-13, 1977, Thornton stopped a vehicle by using his red emergency lights on his military police jeep. The vehicle was driven by Anthony Lee Bates and occupied by passengers Wesley Hawkins, Juanita Ann Deckard, and Linda Needham. All the occupants of the car were teenagers who lived in the Fort Leonard Wood area. Thornton informed Bates and Hawkins that the South Gate Texaco station, a nearby gas station which is not on United States property, had been robbed and that Bates' car *1353 matched the description of the car involved in the robbery. While the South Gate Texaco station was not, in fact, robbed on January 12-13, 1977, if the South Gate Texaco station had been robbed, as Thornton alleged, he would have had the authority to stop and detain suspected vehicles on the military base while he was on duty.

After stopping the vehicle, Thornton ordered the two males, Bates and Hawkins, to get out of the car. He handcuffed Bates and Hawkins' hands behind their backs and placed the two youths in the back seat of the military police jeep. Then, without provocation, Thornton shot Anthony Lee Bates and Wesley Hawkins through the chest with his military issue 45-calibre pistol as they sat handcuffed in the back seat of the jeep.

After shooting Bates and Hawkins, Thornton ordered Juanita Ann Deckard and Linda Needham into the jeep and took them to a cabin on a remote part of the Army base. He then forcibly raped the girls and forced them to commit oral sodomy upon each other and to commit oral sodomy upon him.

Afterwards, Thornton took the girls outside, to another area, and shot the two girls. He then buried all four victims in the snow and left them for dead. NOTE: Juanita Ann Deckard, played dead, and when Thornton departed the area, she walked through the heavy snow, and a thickly wooded area, for over five miles, to a residence to seek out help. Anthony Lee Bates, Wesley Hawkins, and Linda Needham died as a result of the gunshot wounds inflicted by Thornton. Juanita Ann Deckard was the only survivor of Thornton's attack. On July 26, 1977, in criminal proceedings, Thornton was convicted of murder in the first degree, assault with intent to kill, rape, and kidnapping for the purpose of committing rape.

Thornton is also a possible person of interest in the October 1976 disappearance of two other teenagers from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

The defendant's mother, Deanie Thornton, testified in barely audible tones Monday that her son began having frequent headaches after his father, John Warden, choked, beat and shot at him as a preschool child. She said she hid from Warden and lived in 20 to 25 places, including an abandoned car. She said her son lost consciousness at least twice during the healings, and the last time Thornton saw his father was "when he almost choked him to death," requiring the youngster lo have surgery. She later married Bruce Thornton, who gave his name to her children. As the prosecution began its case Monday, Miss Deekard testified that she and Linda Needham, 16, had told Thornton their names during the episode and he never referred to them by other names. Prosecution witness Dr. William Clary of Springfield, Mo., testified last week that the two girls represented in Thornton's mind his wife and mother, while the two boys represented a threat to his relationship with the wife and mother. Testimony showed Thornton told the teenagers their car matched the description of one used in a robbery. He then handcuffed and shot the two boys in his jeep, drove all four to a game warden's cabin, and forced the girls to perform various sexual acts before killing Miss Needham, according to testimony. Miss Needham, 16, Anthony Lee Bales, 18, and Wesley Hawkins, 18, all of Plato, Mo., were shot to death on the night of Jan. 12. Miss Deekard, who was shot twice, was picked up by a passing motorist after struggling through several miles of rugged, snowy terrain. Earlier on Monday, Military Policeman Mike Mason testified that Thornton was "one of the most well-liked people around, a good M.P. and a real good game warden." The trial was moved to Council Bluffs after judges in St. Joseph and Springfield, Mo., ruled impartial juries could not be selected in those cities

This article is incredibly long, and reads more like an indiscriminate list of serial killers organized by number of murders. Perhaps it should only include serial killers with 10 confirmed or suspected murders? Edit: I think I'll do this without consensus, because the article is even more massive than I thought. For the entry, "Ted Kaczynski" there is (1) no source, (2) editorializing and opinion presented as fact: "...illogically justified..." the word "illogically" is the editor's opinion and has no place in an objective fact-based encyclopedia, and (3) the inclusion of this individual in a list of "serial killers" is disputed: Kaczynski had ideological justifications for his killings and his targets and victims were consistent with this ideology. Moreover, this ideology is not unique to him--it's held by many other thinkers (as is evidenced by the common claim that Kaczynski's ideas are "unoriginal").
