Reclusive vs recluse, and myths

Myths:

Reclusive:

• Claude Debussy: The New Yorker says "reclusive", not "recluse". A paper refers to him as "something of a recluse"; the same phrasing pops up in a book review. The Cambridge Companion to Debussy, used as a source to support the claim, says "increasingly reclusive and miserable during his final years."[1] Claude Debussy: A Critical Biography, by François Lesure (a specialist in Debussy) and Marie Rolf, uses "reclusive" only once (and not in describing him) and "recluse" not at all.

• Michelangelo: still looking for strong sources (lots of weak ones say reclusive), but National Geographic is not a good source for this particular topic, and Michelangelo only uses the word "reclusive", and that only once.

The very fact that I can find little that talks about Michelangelo's alleged reclusiveness disqualifies him from this list. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:16, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Lee Mavers should be on the list

I feel he fits the criteria of a recluse even if he occasionally gives interviews and performs, I wouldn’t say he just simply values his privacy.

Those don't back up your claims.

The Guardian article shows him as a family man in the Liverpool suburbs. Hardly the portrait of a recluse shut off from society. Again, reclusive does not mean recluse.

The BBC Culture article says he is musically inactive, though "Mavers has spent the intervening years assembling various short-lived incarnations of The La's", went on a 2005 reunion tour, and made "some guest appearances with Pete Doherty in 2009". Just because he doesn't crave the public spotlight doesn't make him a recluse.

The Anfield Wrap article lists various performances: "impromptu club gigs in London", "small, seemingly unrelated venues around the country bashing out the old tunes", "the Manchester Deaf Institute under the name 'Lee Rude and The Velcro Underpants'". It even states:

As music journalist Alexis Petridis so succinctly put: "Mavers did not much resemble the drugged out idiot-savant of popular myth".

There is no drug paraphernalia, no guitars or posters, no signs whatsoever of the tortured, shambolic recluse. Children are playing, the football results are on.

Each of the articles uses the word "reclusive" once or twice. Only the Anfield Wrap says "recluse", and that's to say he isn't one. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:29, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
