Requested move 29 June 2019 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. Editors favored the lowercase form of presidents, citing MOS:JOBTITLES, which states that the plural form of presidents is considered a common noun. An editor noted that two lists related to the United States do not conform to this guideline, but most editors prioritized adherence to MOS:JOBTITLES over consistency with the US lists. – Per Wikipedia's MOS:JOBTITLES: "Offices, titles, and positions such as president, king, emperor, grand duke, lord mayor, pope, bishop, abbot, chief financial officer, and executive director are common nouns and therefore should be in lower case when used generically. They are capitalized... when a formal title for a specific entity... is not plural."
This Wikipedia guideline reflects major style guides such as AP Stylebook and The Chicago Manual of Style, which explicitly state that "presidents" (plural) should always be lower case and that "president" (singular) should be upper case only when preceding a president's name.
For similar recent discussions, see Talk:List of presidents of Austria, Talk:List of presidents of the Czech Republic, Talk:List of chancellors of Germany, and Talk:List of governors of New York. Surtsicna (talk) 08:42, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose, as this seems another end-around List of Presidents of the United States and the discussion at List of Vice-Presidents of the United States, which kept the upper-cased form. On English Wikipedia those are the two where this discussion should first be held. If changed there, then change the lists which have less page watchers. Fairness. • And this claim was rejected just days ago at Talk:List of presidents of the Czech Republic. It is absurdly Americentric to suggest that the titles of the articles listed above should conform to List of Presidents of the United States rather than to MOS:JOBTITLES, a Wikipedia guideline which is based on community consensus and which reflects all major style guides in the English-speaking world. References to English style manuals and Wikipedia guidelines would be much more meaningful than Amerika über alles arguments. Surtsicna (talk) 11:45, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
      • Claim rejected at Czech Republic, well, that RM was closed with two (2) support and one opposed. Besides myself two editors weighed in. That's exactly what I mean, not that I'm thinking Americancentric or am waving a German-language banner (?). By not going directly to the U.S. pages and working around them this RM is off the beaten track. It will be seen by many less people than it would at the U.S. pages. When you finally get to those you can then list this one, and that one, and others, which may sway some people. That's what I mean by fairness. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:55, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
        • Move discussions are not polls. Arguments matter, not numbers. Your rejection of separate discussions as invalid for not making reference to the US and demand that the titles of these articles be modeled after the title of List of Presidents of the United States, itself in contravention of guidelines and English orthography, is, by definition, Americentric. I would also add that it's unfair. Surtsicna (talk) 13:12, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
        • So is there an argument against the proposed moves that is based on guidelines or orthography? Surtsicna (talk) 15:46, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per reason stated, that being, MOS:JOBTITLES. We should follow policies/guidelines above all else. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 21:51, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Strong support. There has been a clear recent trend toward following the MOS:JOBTITLES more consistently in such article titles, which I strongly support. MOS:JOBTITLES itself has also been further clarified. Wikipedia has a Manual of Style and we should apply it consistently. I provided lots of further detail about that in the discussion at Talk:List of presidents of the Czech Republic, so please see that discussion. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:45, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Strong support – The guidance of WP:NCCAPS is clear: don't cap title words that are not part of a proper name. The same concept is supported by MOS:CAPS, MOS:JOBTITLES, ... Dicklyon (talk) 05:11, 30 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
