Talk:List of people of Welsh descent

Latest comment: 17 years ago by Telsa in topic Copyvio

What an appalling grab-bag of people who just might have a Welsh ancestor, without much apparent research into whether they actually qualify. Apart from claiming to be people of Welsh 'decent' rather than 'descent', it declares the qualification as people who would qualify to play for Wales, i.e. that they have a Welsh-born grandparent, and then promptly includes people like Tom Cruise and Gabriel Batistuta whose connection (if any) is much more remote, apart from also including totally incorrect people: No, "The Edge" was NOT born in Llanelli, if you look at his article he was born in Barking, London; No, Bob Hope's parents did NOT come from Barry - his mother was Welsh but his father was from Weston-super-Mare; No, Oliver Cromwell does NOT qualify; No, David Lloyd George was NOT born in Liverpool, he was born in Manchester, and anyway he's already on the List of Welsh people, as are many others listed here. Just because Lord Carnarvon had a Welsh placename for a title it in NO WAY makes him Welsh, neither was Jim Callaghan Welsh because he represented a Cardiff constituency, he was born in Portsmouth. -- Arwel (talk) 11:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Having spent over an hour going through the men's list and trying to wikify it, I'm horrified at how slap-dash and lacking ELEMENTARY fact-checking this list is. Nick Park born in North Wales? LOOK AT HIS BLOODY ARTICLE - HE WAS BORN IN PRESTON, LANCASHIRE. Henry VII won the Battle of Boswell??? Where the hell's that? Bosworth, perhaps? Howard Stringer the president of Sony USA?? He was promoted to Chairman of Sony Corporation worldwide several years ago. William Wallace born in Usk? And we've got the usual list of American presidents who are claimed to be of Welsh descent, whose ancestry is never specified in detail and probably was a lot more distant than a grandparent and would NEVER be accepted as Welsh by actual people born in Wales. Oh, and there's far too much editorialising in this article to be NPOV, as well as quite simply gross inaccuracies. Baden Powell Welsh? Just because Powell is a Welsh surname does NOT make him so. There's just enough wildly inaccurate stuff in here to make me wonder whether the original poster is deliberately trying to insert total nonsense into Wikipedia. I've stuck lots of "citation needed" templates in here, but in truth EVERY NAME LISTED HERE NEEDS TO BE VERIFIED. -- Arwel (talk) 13:24, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tend to support the comments made above. If one is claiming Welsh descent for an individual the Welsh link must be clear and ambiguous and probably no more distant than grandparent to be relevant.

With regard to the list of Welsh notables, there is an issue with individuals who were born outside Wales who have since moved to Wales and would claim to be Welsh. Dafydd Wigley would be a prime modern example of such a case and Lloyd George falls into the same category.

I suppose there should be three lists: 1)Those who were born in Wales 2)Those who, through assocation over a long period of time, have 'become' Welsh or who consider themselves Welsh. 3)Those of Welsh descent defined on fairly strict criteria as noted above.

Certainly there needs to be more rigour in assessing whether a particular person should be included and agree with Arwel on this.

Copyvio edit

I've seen this list before. This is a copyvio of the Guild of Glyndwr's Welsh Hall of Fame. Right down to the "We would be grateful if.." at the top. I think that takes care of the question of merging? Telsa (talk) 08:51, 20 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

(Later.) I was going to list it on (warning, giant page) Wikipedia:Copyright problems, after which stage I imagine it will be deleted without comment after seven days. But would it be reasonable instead just to blank the text and turn it into a redirect to the other article? It would certainly be faster. Telsa (talk) 12:35, 21 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd be inclined to blank the text and re-direct as you suggest.

I agree too. If I'd noticed the copyvio I'd have saved myself hours! -- Arwel (talk) 14:48, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Done then. Given my tardiness, possibly the normal route would have been faster, but oh well! Telsa (talk) 17:21, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
