Talk:List of people from Ann Arbor, Michigan

Latest comment: 12 years ago by Finn Froding in topic Inclusion guidelines

"From" should mean "from Ann Arbor, as in 'born' "

edit

Numerous people need to be taken off this list, e.g., "Kenny G." I have edited this entry to conform with reality. Another (much longer) entry can be created for "people remotely associated with the city of Ann Arbor at one time or another in their life." Ngfrazier (talk)

Shakey Jake is certainly known to most Ann Arborites as a charming fixture of the public spaces downtown. However, it is misleading to call him a 'musician.' He does carry a guitar, but by his own admission, he does not know how to play it! The strings are usually broken or missing. He is a part of Ann Arbor's scene, but not it's musical scene.Jpsarch 20:55, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

A page similar to this one. List of people from San Francisco, is currently under review as an article for deletion, for reasons which would apply to this article as well. I am conducting an RfC on the talk page of the above-mentioned list to determine whether the concensus agrees on keeping such lists or not. Any and all comments are more than welcome. Shakey Jake added back in

edit

Don't know *why* someone decided that "Shakey Jake" was not notable, considering he's one of the town's biggest celebrities and has been for many years. (After all, there's a Wikipedia page discussing the "Emperor" Norton of San Francisco). Perhaps the person who removed his name is either a) younger, and possibly unaware of Jake's longtime popularity (<15 years), or b) a new arrival or someone living outside Ann Arbor.

The Bagel Factory chain created T-shirts around him; there are even "I Brake for Jake" bumper stickers. Run a quick Google search for "Shaky Jake" and "Ann Arbor" (to distinguish from other similarly named musicians) and http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=SHakey+Jake+Ann+arbor (alternate spelling "Shakey") and you'll find many links, including a 2001 Metro Times article and mention of local awards he's won from Current magazine.

It boggles the mind that he would not be included in a list of people from Ann Arbor, when patently, he is notable and recurrently covered in local magazines from Ann Arbor to Detroit, as well as local media, advertisements, etc. In fact, although Brownsville Station had a top 40 hit with "Smoking in the Boys Room," that band is nowhere near as well known as "Shakey Jake". Of course, this article doesn't mention Laurette Spang, or Bo Schembechler, or William D. Revelli, who ran the Michigan Marching Band program for more than thirty years and was lionized with his own building. 67.10.133.121 10:44, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Michael Phelps?

edit

Is it necessary to include Michael Phelps in here? He was here for four years, and was affiliated with the University of Michigan really. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.40.56.139 (talk) 20:34, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Inclusion guidelines

edit

While a WP list should not included non-notables, it need not be limited only to those with Wikipedia articles. Many well-maintained lists allow individuals with reliable third-party references (NOT their own web pages or blogs). See WP:LISTPEOPLE As the header states, the list should not include those who merely attended the U of M (There is another list of University of Michigan alumni), but it can include faculty or alumni whose work and fame are associated with Ann Arbor. And please add inclusive dates, at least for deceased individuals! Finn Froding (talk) 18:24, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
