Missing edit

Very informative page, but it misses the list of wire services/news agencies in Pakistan. Please consider adding. Thanks

External links edit

I removed two links from the External links section which have been placed in a comment field now.

The link listofnewspapers.com fails ELNO points #5, #8, & #14.

The link newspapers2u.com is currently proposed for blacklisting as it has been spammed into multiple articles repeatedly and two sockpuppets and an IP range were blocked today regarding this issue.

I'm not sure that keeping them in a comment field is necessary.

Leaving the two links as comments in the External links section for a little while certainly won't hurt anything.
listofnewspapers.com isn't one of the two links involved here. The link is www.onlinenewspapers.com/pakistan.htm. The Pakistan newspaper pages on the two sites are similar, but not the same.
The story is a little more complicated. Berean Hunter deleted the two links at 12:45 on 25 June with the comment "rm spam". I restored the links at 13:12 with the comment "I don't see what makes the two deleted external links SPAM more than any other list of newspapers or online outlets". Berean deleted the links again at 13:40 with the comment "the first link is being spammed by socks and currently proposed as blackisting...the other fails ELNO #5, #8, & #14. Please use talk page if you wish to discuss further". I was making some other changes to the external links section at the same time, but had to merge my changes because of Berean's. So at 14:14 I put the two links in question into an XML comment with a note "the next two links are the subject of a dispute, 25 June 2011". My plan was to enter something on this talk page later today when I had some time, but Berean beat me to it.
I'm not going to argue that the newspapers2u.com link should be kept, if that site has been engaged in sock puppetry on a number of other articles. The link was only added here recently and its list of newspapers is relatively short. If the only issues had to do with this article, I might argue that a link to a list of Pakistani newspapers was an appropriate External link for the article "Lists newspapers in Pakistan".
I am going to argue for restoring the www.onlinenewspapers.com/pakistan.htm link. The linked page has a much longer list of Pakistani newspapers. It was originally added to the article over 5 years ago (13 April 2006) and doesn't seem to have caused any trouble or been the subject of any complaints. I am always uneasy about deleting longstanding content from an article. With regard to ELNO #8, the page looks pretty plain to me. There is some JavaScript on the page, but the page seems to work OK without it. The linked page is a list of links to newspapers in Pakistan and the article is a List of newspapers in Pakistan, so I think we need to use a little common sense as we apply ELNO #5 and #14. I don't see "objectionable amounts of advertising" on the page. I don't know one way or another that the linked page is one that "primarily exist to sell products or services", but it certainly isn't making a hard sell and it lets me link to the various newspaper sites for free. So all in all I think this page makes a reasonable contribution to a Wilipedia article that is a "List of newspapers in Pakistan" and feel that the link should be restored.

My apologies. You are quite right about the second link. I was hunting down a few using multiple browser tabs and confused the link with the other one. I'm content that only newspapers2u.com be removed and will replace the other one now. Sorry for the mistake.

Not done because there is nothing to do. The Pakistan Times is already listed as the first entry. ~Anachronist (talk) 03:01, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
