The Dalmatian?? edit

Ok, I have no idea why "globerove.com" is supposed to be a reliable source, but either way, I am absolutely certain the Dalmatian is neither generally viewed as, nor officially established as, the national animal of Croatia. If anything, that's the Peregrine Falcon. Take it from a human "Dalmatian" (as in "a person from Dalmatia"). In fact, in spite of public opinion (now often voiced by silly canine aficionado websites), there is little or no evidence the dog breed really comes from Dalmatia (which is, of course, a region of Croatia).. -- Director (talk) 00:14, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'll say again: the silly website is not a reliable source, and the Dalmatian dog is certainly not the national animal of Croatia. I dare say the very thought is laughable to anyone from Croatia.. -- Director (talk) 09:08, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good point about the site globerove.com. I'm going to remove both the entries on Croatia (the Peregrine Falcon one and the Dalmatian one). Once a reliable source is found that states what Croatia's national animal actually is, the entry should be re-added. — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 04:52, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
The marten appears to be considered by some to be the national animal, but I assure you the falcon is also used extensively in that regard on various images and statues. The Dalmatian is assuredly not the national animal in any sense, except for being maybe sometimes considered (alongside the donkey) as the symbol of the specific region of Dalmatia, but this is highly informal (graffiti and such), whereas the actual regional symbol is the lion... -- Director (talk) 12:38, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agreed about the Dalmatian dog. It certainly isn't a national animal, it's used more as a symbol in popular culture. However the same could be said of the Peregrine Falcon. I have never ever heard of it as a "national animal". Yes it is used in quite a few traditional songs and traditionally there have been cultural and other (whatnot) societies named after it ("Hrvatski Sokol" - Croatian Falcon f.e.) but like the Dalmatian dog it is used more in a non-formal fashion. To claim it's a "national animal" would be an overstatement....to put it mildly. Shokatz (talk) 14:11, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I also agree about the Dalmatian dog. I'd say it definitely is not a national animal. I'm not sure about the Peregrine Falcon, it is true that it is being used in some songs but that doesn't make it a national animal. Maybe it should be removed until we find adequate sources. Anon7mous (talk) 17:20, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Not going to insist since I can't find sources. The marten is more a Slavonian symbol than Croatian in general, in my experience. Its on the Slavonian traditional coat of arms. -- Director (talk) 17:55, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well the Croatian currency Kuna (eng. Marten) is named after it so by that standard alone that makes it a national symbol. Btw. I will remove the Falcon from the list. Also I will update the Symbols of Croatia by replacing Falcon with a Marten. Until ofc we find some sources Shokatz (talk) 20:28, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Exactly, Croatian currency is named after marten and it is a part of croatian coat of arms. There are plenty of sources that support those claims. Falcon on the other hand is unsourced so I would keep it away from the article until proven otherwise. Anon7mous (talk) 20:49, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Right right.. as I said, I can't find a source so I won't insist further. -- Director (talk) 12:05, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Serbian animal(s) edit

The falcon and/or the wolf are not, to my knowledge, "national animals" of Serbia. Further, as regards the "white eagle" entry: there is no such animal, and the image added was a snapshot of the Spanish Imperial Eagle. Serbian heraldry, being lifted directly from Byzantine heraldry of the Palaiologos dynasty, does not feature any real-life animals. The animal on the Serbian coa is a double-headed white eagle with the Palaiologos cross emblazoned on a shield. -- Director (talk) 13:40, 12 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Animal of austria edit

The Black Eagle as national animal of austria is plain wrong. If it has to be an animal it would be the Golden Eagle. If anyone read the Black Eagle page, one would see, that this animal's home are the forests of tropical Asia (!) and not Europe.

If anyone is interested in our real national symbols, you can find them under Nationales Symbol (German Wikipedia) (here's a translation to English using Google Translate: Link.

I did not edit the page in any way, since I'm not registered member and I don't want to "vandalize" this article, but someone really should consider either removing Austria from that list or research the real Austrian national animal, as it is not the Black Eagle.

Blegium's national animal is not a lion edit

Belgium is divided into 3 regions:

  1. Flandria/Flanders (Vlaanderen) - their national animal is a lion
  2. Wallonia (Wallonië)- their national animal is the cock
  3. Brussels - their national animal is both the animals...

Major editing help needed, edit

I have redesigned the list to provide more information and for a better presentable look and be in syn with List of national birds. Definitely need help to finish the list as its a long one. Please add scientific names when and where you can, follow the link of animals and copy/paste. That's it. Also compare the national birds list to check the official status and add the information. Thank you.

Given that it's been almost two years since the need for references was identified, it's probably time to strip out all of those without official sources. My concern is that at least some of the provided references aren't reliable. :( --Yamla (talk) 13:59, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

So called "Macedonia" edit

Since wikipedia is a source of facts, i request that "macedonia" is altered to "skopia". The lion as a national animal was of the macedonian empire, a greek empire. I am new here as a user and i don't know if i can edit right away or everything passes through an admin or a discussion. [1] Arcalex (talk) 20:07, 11 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Italy edit

The italian wikipedia page mentions that the national animals of Italy are the Italian Wolf and the Golden Eagle, there are various sources on the web about that, can you add them and link the source too? I'm not good at using wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.181.181.178 (talk) 20:08, 25 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

The Grey wolf and Italian Wolf are the national animals of Italy. With the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_wolf being the most common and the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_wolf being more regional. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.46.143.98 (talk) 14:02, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

You'll need to provide a reliable source to cite that information. Wikipedia articles can't be used to cite themselves. --Yamla (talk) 14:11, 25 June 2018 (UTC

I provided a reliable source why the fudge it gets canceled everytime no I can not even edit this article thats so dump I used the same source like the Italian version of this article! THIS SUCKS! — Preceding unsigned comment added by PaoloMG (talkcontribs)

Your account has never edited the article. If you are talking about the sources provided above by 200.46.143.98, they don't meet WP:RS. Wikipedia is not itself a reliable source. Easy source material possibility - list upgrade edit

Some of the other language versions of this page have data that is NOT on this page. They also have sources. It would be a good idea if the information was gathered to the English page and then this was translated back to the other languages as faithfully as possible. It might be possible to machine translate the blue links to other languages if they exist, or put in those cute foreign language links that redirect to english (or whatever was the source) until the local language page becomes available. The references could be added across all the languages with a (lang) tag so people can pick which ones to follow if they have language preferences.

I specifically noticed that there is a mich shorter Finnish (Suomi) version of this list that includes the Finnish animals but they are not included in this english version. It also has 17 out of the 20 references in English which may plug some holes here. The other languages may provide more info. The French version is using very few refs but arranges the animals by continent. If a continent column was included it could be selecetd for sorting so everything can be in one list.

As mentioned in responce to a previous comment above the images could be made a bit smaller.

If there was a column for animal, mammal, bird, fish, flower, arthropod, reptile, mythical it might also be possible to sort using this.

Merging the list with national birds or whatever would be a big bonus as it will provide further source material and a single source of such beasts and perhaps the old page can redirect to a version that sorts by type of animal, then country and then colapses the rest fo the animals, yeah, just dreaming unless there is a table layout super coder out there.

Having the country and flag next to all the beasts would not be a great hardship (with the big images it would actually help as it is often off screen) and would allow the automatic sorting by other columns.

Vandalism edit

I have noticed that another user has deleted Palestine and its national animal from this list without informing anyone. I know that he has not informed anyone as the fact Palestine was deleted did not appear in the history and the subject was only brought up once in the talk page and no one replied. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion but Wikipedia is not about opinions, it is about facts; and the fact of the matter is that like it or not Palestine is recognized by most countries, therefore it is officially a country. It is not even required to be an "official" country to make this list; for example Anguilla and the Faroe Islands. So please keep your political views to debating sites and remain impartial here.--ToufikR (talk) 02:46, 17 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Images and copyright infringement edit

I am a new user to Wikipedia and when editing this article I did not add images as I did not want use copyrighted images. I searched all over the internet for advice and couldn't find any good advice. Does anyone know how to add images of the animals without infringing copyright? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ToufikR (talkcontribs) 02:54, 17 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

You could go to your local zoo and take a picture, then release the image as public domain. That won't work for all animals, of course. --Yamla (talk) 13:22, 17 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. Also what does "The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision." mean? I noticed I made this mistake for the giant panda and Palestine sunbird but not for the steppe eagle. I want to find better references for these animals but I do not want to make the same mistake again. And sorry for forgetting to sign my last comment. --ToufikR (talk) 14:05, 17 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Mexico and Honduras edit

The national animal of Mexico is the águila real (golden eagle), as clearly mentioned in this government webage: http://www.gob.mx/semarnat/articulos/aguila-real-al-rescate-de-un-simbolo-patrio Also stated in other wikipedia articles: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Animales_emblem%C3%A1ticos_de_cada_pa%C3%ADs https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquila_chrysaetos

Also, the national bird of Honduras is the scarlet macaw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_macaw http://www.hondurasnatural.net/ara-macao-ave-nacional-de-honduras/ (and many more websites as evidence)

Can someone please correct these entries? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.83.188.159 (talk) 20:27, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Russia edit

The bear is correct for Russia, of course, but if the UK has the Unicorn (mythical) and the lion (which has never had any wild population in the islands), then the double eagle should also be listed for Russia. This mythical/heraldic bird is a long-standing symbol of the country. 195.67.149.174 (talk) 08:43, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

You are required to give a reliable citation. --Yamla (talk) 11:18, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I believe the actual source for the bear is not a reliable one, more like a catch-phrase for a tourist booklet. For more details you may refer to Russian Bear, and to some sources like rbth.com clearly stating the bear is not an internally agreed-upon symbol of the country.
