Woodstone has twice redirected this list to the List of pitch intervals, a topic that has little or nothing to do with musical intervals. In a recent summary, he/she wrote "this list is redundant with the full explanation of said intervals at musical intervals". If that is the reason for the redirect, why is it to a totally different topic?
It's my opinion that this list serves a useful purpose, if only as an antidote to the confused muddle at the other list. In this opinion I am encouraged by that of Hucbald.SaintAmand, who wrote here "the List of musical intervals, on the other hand, needs to be restored as soon as possible, because it is a useful list, doing exactly what its title says". - Similarly Justlettersandnumbers has twice reverted to his/her preferred version. That version is a very limited view on musical intervals. It only lists intervals used in texts on harmony and counterpoint in traditional western music. It ignores any intervals used in discussions about intonation, tuning and measurement as well as non-western and experimental music theory and practice. The intervals in the limited list are fully listed and explained in the article musical intervals, which would be the natural starting point for a casual reader. The more complete list at the awkwardly named list of pitch intervals would be difficult to find for a reader with deeper interest. Therefore a redriect to that list is more valuable than a limited list with no explanation. Perhaps this page should be turned into a disambiguation page. −Woodstone (talk) 15:30, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
- Exactly. It lists only the intervals that people are likely to want to know about in (mainstream Western) music, based on reliable sources that do exactly the same, and is careful not to confuse them with non-musical intervals, units of measurement and the like. That is what it is here to do, and is what it does – or at least, would do if it hadn't been turned into a redirect again by Woodstone, who might like to read up on WP:BRD. Where is the problem? - I agree that the compromise is acceptable. On the other hand, I utterly refute that the List of pitch intervals could in any way concern non-Western music theory and practice. It should be clear that to view intervals as ratios, or as exact logarithmic values (down to "millicents", cents with two figures after the comma!) in itself is utterly Western. Such a view has had devastating effects on non-Western music, a point of which any serious Western music theorist should be aware. I hope that anyone seriously involved in these matters may read this talk page: this is why I give my opinion here.
