Origin of names
editI removed "being the Dutch name of origin" since at least one municipality, i.e. Evere, is of Celtic origin (source in French and Dutch: Official web site in page "Histoire/Geschiedenis"). -- Edcolins 13:16, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Remove matter
editI've removed the following paragraph (it should be merged if appropriate in the history section of Brussels article):
"All municipalities in Brussels are officially bilingual. Among the population, roughly 15 to 20% (no official figures are available) is supposed to have Dutch as mother tongue, some 70% French and remaining percentages Turkish, berber, Arabic, Italian, Spannish etc. In practice, there is a strong nationalist pressure from French-speakers against this official bilingual status. As a result, many local public services have a reputation for discriminating against Flemings, and some also for even worse discriminations against guest-workers and their families (the so-called 'allochtonen' in Dutch and 'allochtones' in French). Early 90's, an official declaration from the regional government confirmed that social housing was reserved for 100% for those applying in French. As late as 2003, Rudy Demotte, the national minister of Public Health and a French-speaking socialist, explicitely acknowledged that urgent medical services (in hopsitals) were still massively discriminating against Flemings."
It was not appropriate to it in the front of the article. --Edcolins 20:17, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Clarification
editSecond paragraph of the lead, two points I find a tad confusing;
- "However, several municipalities outside of the Brussels-Capital Region have been merged with the City of Brussels throughout its history including Laken, Haren, and Neder-Over-Heembeek, which were merged into the City of Brussels in 1921."
- The Capital District wasn't established in 1921, and today those areas are located within it as, obviously, they are part of the City of Brussels. They all form part of the northern extent of the City. So how can you say that municipalities outside the CR were merged with the city in '21?
- The CR didn't exist, but the municipalities did. Malinaccier (talk) 21:40, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- "In 1831, Belgium was divided into 2,739 municipalities, including the 19 in the Brussels-Capital Region."
- If three municipalities were merged in 1921, surely there would be at least 22 in the Brussels CR in 1831?
- The Municipalities were merged from other regions. Malinaccier (talk) 21:40, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Can anyone explain this, perhaps clarify it in the article, or correct the error?- J.Logan`t: 16:07, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think you've missed the point of the questions. 1) the three municipalities were never outside the region as they were part of the city since its creation. So how can you say the city was merged with areas outside the region when it covers the present territory? 2) The line states Belgium, not Brussels. Therefore it would be 33 or the 2,739 municipalities, not 19 of the 2,739 municipalities unless the 2,739 is wrong as a result of the miscalculation.- J.Logan`t: 23:00, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- They were merged into the already existing City of Brussels. What miscalculation? Malinaccier (talk) 23:05, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- Its the wording. "outside of the Brussels-Capital Region have been merged with the City of Brussels" - was Laken ever outside the Capital District throughout its entire existence? Considering Brussels CR was created after Laken was merged with CoBrussels it is not clear what the point being made is. Second, In 1831 the three merged in 1921 would be separate, hence Brussels would have had three extra, 22 not 19, at least (others were merged?). Based on that, is the 2729 figure based on Brussels having 19, and hence should be 2732, or is it an over all figure that you applied the number 19 to?- J.Logan`t: 10:48, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- They were merged into the already existing City of Brussels. What miscalculation? Malinaccier (talk) 23:05, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Are the borders in one image wrong?
editThe current version contains two maps and the second has the strange text "The map with the right borders". What's right or righter about the second map?
With no context, the text is just confusing and I'm thinking of removing the text or maybe the image, but I'd rather fix the article by adding a note about the shortcomings of whichever map. (Obviously best solution would be to fix either map, if necessary, but I probably won't have time to figure out exactly what to do and do it.) Great floors (talk) 20:13, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
"the map above"
editIn the table introduction, there is the text The numbers in the "#" row refer to the map above — leaving aside that "column" was meant instead of "row", the map above has only names and no numbers. Has there been a map edit and is the "#" column now obsolete? Pseudomonas(talk) 15:22, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
- Well, it doesn't make much sense now, I'm removing it. Regards, --Bsckr (talk) 04:33, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
