Include names of principal settlements?

edit

Should we include details about principal settlements for which there is a wiki article e.g.

Makana Local Municipality (EC104) [Grahamstown]

Put it in tables etc

edit

Is it possible to maybe put these into tables and/or include area and population? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.240.70.30 (talk) 19:14, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I think so. I can't extract data from the demarcation web site but I do have a ready document from StatsSA with 2007 data for all municipalities, including number of persons and number of households. I have no idea where to get data like area. As for principal settlements, it's a case of manual searching (but I've done it here so you can see what it looks like). It would also be nice if we could add logos of each municipality and perhaps a map with an indication of where it is, but I'm not sure how one would do that. -- leuce (talk) 19:31, 19 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Municipal seat towns

edit

I've started adding the seat towns for local and district municipalities. I "randomly" started with the DM where I live. :) I think we should work on completing this for all the municipalities in time for the upcoming elections. Roger (talk) 16:26, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I like it. I think we should actually go further and convert this list to a table, with area and population data, as suggested in the previous section. I actually have a source for area data (the Demarcation Board's GIS file). So the table could look something like this for the Western Cape:

What do you think? - htonl (talk) 18:22, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I like it! But I'm not really comfortable working in tables - I'm afraid I'll break a cell or scramble a whole column if I put a comma in the wrong place. Should I continue adding the towns in the current list format or should I wait until all the tables are created? Roger (talk) 09:30, 12 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Another thought - looking at the WC table you've made - it's not explcitly stated that "City of Cape Town" is a metropolitan municipality. I've added the word "Metro" with a link to Metropolitan municipality (South Africa) like so: [[City of Cape Town]] [[Metropolitan municipality (South Africa)|(Metro)]]. How about that? Roger (talk) 09:50, 12 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Go ahead with adding the towns, as it makes it easier for me to fill in the tables if I don't have to look them up myself. As for Cape Town - it's actually the only metro where "Metropolitan Municipality" isn't part of the official name (e.g. Joburg is "City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality") so we might just list it as "City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality" to be consistent with the others. - htonl (talk) 10:05, 12 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I see that City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality is already a redirect so that solves it nicely. Roger (talk) 10:27, 12 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've completed adding municipal seats for a few more provinces. I'll continue tomorrow - KZN is a huge (and scary!) chunk of work! Roger (talk) 19:33, 12 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
You've beaten me to it for some of the provinces. I've now completed adding all the remaining seat towns. It's just a pity there are so many redlinks. Roger (talk) 17:42, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Demarcation changes coinciding with the 2011 Local Elections

edit

Wow, it looks so different two days later! But great job. I'm just too nervous to edit it now. Could someone add another note that Nokeng tsa Taemane and Kungwini will be merged with Tshwane metro after the elections? See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokeng_tsa_Taemane_Local_Municipality#cite_note-3 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kungwini_Local_Municipality#cite_note-2 for verification. I guess that means Metsweding DM will cease to exist? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gk sa (talkcontribs) 19:20, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Done. I also added a note about the merger of Kagisano and Molopo municipalities in the NW. - htonl (talk) 19:33, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rename

edit

Would this article be better named "List of municipalities in South Africa"? Thoughts? - htonl (talk) 15:25, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It will then also be in compliance with WP:TITLEFORMAT as I understand it, which requires nouns instead of adjectives (South Africa instead of South African). Roger (talk) 16:24, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have requested opinions from MOS regulars at Wikipedia talk:Article titles#Which title is preferred? Roger (talk) 16:36, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well is seems the proposal isn't attracting any objections so I'm doing it now. Roger (talk) 09:17, 16 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
