Talk:List of motifs on banknotes

Should this not be called Motifs on banknotes, not Motives? A motif is a theme but a motive is the reason why something happens. Dabbler 03:03, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, you're right. I wasn't quite sure about that one myself. I'm not a native speaker, so I guess that'll be my excuse. I'll change the page name too. Eixo 14:31, 13 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't motif mean common element? I would expect this to be about themes that recur among banknotes, such as a common element among different denominations of U.S. dollars or British pounds or whatever, not about the part of the design that is different on each bill! That's pretty much the opposite of a motif, as I understand it. -Branddobbe 15:40, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Cool page. I just noticed it. As a native English speaker, I would use "designs" instead of motifs, but I'm not sure if a different word would be more common among collectors (I am not a banknote collector, but the images on coins are usually referred to as designs). Merge with List of people on banknotes edit

Support edit

Don't know merging to which one edit

  1. No brainer. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 08:45, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Merge to List of motifs on banknotes edit

  1. It´s the same thing, The other one is better organized but this one is longer so I suggest moving this one and putting the info in the tables used there.--ometzit<col> 16:08, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  2. Support the merge. The essential idea of the two lists is the same, i.e. summarizing the main content of banknotes. I think it's preferable to merge into "List of motifs…" or something similar because it sounds more general; people are not always pictures on banknotes. --Novelbank 02:20, 8 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Merge to List of people on banknotes edit

Against edit

  1. I disagree with merging the two documents. The List of motifs on banknotes article (I agree that "designs" would be better than "motifs") shows not only people, but monuments, locations, animals, plants/flowers, etc, of banknotes currently in circulation. The List of people on banknotes article lists only people who show on the banknotes and includes banknotes currently in curculation as well as banknotes that have been taken out of circulation. Using the Gallery of flags by design page as a precedent, there is the potential for several more pages like this, including "List of animals on banknotes", "List of trees/plants/flowers on banknotes", "List of banknotes by inscription", "List of locations on banknotes", etc. Plus all of the above pages for coins. ChuchoHuff 13:48, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  2. Agree. Generally, motifs should display personifications, symbols, local features or events. --Brand спойт 13:23, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  3. I think that this one is too different to merge them. This list is a concise country by country list, the other is a higgledy-piggedly list of the various things. Tarcus 06:57, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
  4. A merger isn't really feasible; if all the info from the people page should be merged into the motifs page, the whole thing would become too cluttered. As it is the two lists complement eachother. Lampman 21:57, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Bank Of England20.gif edit

The image Image:Bank Of England20.gif is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.
