Talk:List of modern tramway and light rail systems in the United Kingdom

Tyne & Wear Metro edit

Question: How does the Tyne & Wear Metro fit in here? In North America, it would essentially be considered a "light rail" system. (And, it should be noted, the UK-based Light Rail Transit Association (lrta.org) considers Tyne & Wear Metro a "light rail" system [1], and UK's Department of Transport includes Tyne & Wear Metro in its "Light Rail and Tram Statistics" [2] as well...)

As such, shouldn't it be listed here? It definitely doesn't qualify as a "metro" system... Does it qualify in some other category in the UK?... --IJBall (talk) 21:11, 16 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Added to the table: with both DfT and the LRTA categorizing Tyne and Weap Metro as "light rail", and UITP not counting it as a "metro" system, I think there's no reason it shouldn't be included here. --IJBall (talk) 19:31, 3 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Glasgow edit

Question: https://orr.gov.uk/about-orr/who-we-work-with/railway-networks/light-rail-and-tramways includes the existing Glasgow Underground in its list of "Light rail and tramways operating in Great Britain". Shouldn't it therefore be included in the table here also? As an aside, that link seems reasonable to add as a reference for this page. Simonalexander2005 (talk) 13:31, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Depends on how you define a tram or light rail system. To me, the Glasgow Subway is heavy rail as it's entirely underground with no on-street running or level crossings. Personally I wouldn't call the Tyne and Wear Metro "light rail" either though it does have five level crossings (source) which perhaps disqualifies it from being a proper "metro". How about the Docklands Light Railway? It qualifies as a proper "metro" due to complete grade segregration. Miklcct (talk) 10:55, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Former systems? edit

Perhaps we need a section which lists the many disused tram systems in the UK? 92.9.68.82 (talk) 22:31, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
