Talk:List of mammals of New Zealand

Scope of list

edit

The first sentence currently says that this list covers "the mammal species recorded in New Zealand". Is this meant to include pets, farm animals, feral species such as the Common Brushtail Possum, and rare vagrants like fruit bats, or just native species? I assumed the latter, and deleted a fruit bat from the list. I was about to remove the introduced Polynesian Rat too, but thought I'd check what people think first. -- Avenue 09:37, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

It includes all the species listed on the IUCN Red List query for mammals in the country, which would exclude domesticated animals but probably include everything else (they don't say exactly what the thresholds for inclusion in the query lists are). It isn't definitive: it was meant to fill a gap so anybody interested could work on it without having to go through the laborious process of creating the initial list, finding and linking the WP articles and adding pictures. If you do change anything it would be good to update the the footnote to reflect the changes. Yomanganitalk 11:45, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I removed rodents so it is now only native species. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 07:28, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Article

There should probably be an article on this subject as well as a list. Several books have been written on the subject. Mammals of New Zealand, or the more inclusive mammals in New Zealand are possibilities. Richard001 (talk) 06:33, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
