Talk:List of lists of buildings and structures in Puerto Rico

what is this? perhaps delete edit

I see the original draft of this list-article might have been trying to list the most significant and/or biggest buildings in PR, such as the largest hospital building (no longer included in the current list). But it seems now to be downgraded to linking to any old National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listing, and even including a NRHP-listed Cemeterio or two that is not a building or structure at all. I myself spend most of my Wikipedia editing time on NRHP listed places, and I have created and developed lots of list-articles like List of fire stations, say, but I am not seeing the value of this list. It looks very incomplete, and it is not explained what is covered. All NRHP-listed buildings and structures are already listed in system of list articles from List of RHPs in PR on down. Why list some of those but not others. Why not list bigger modern buildings in PR. Offhand I think this seems unworkable and unhelpful, and I am kinda inclined to nominate this for deletion. But is this modeled after similar lists elsewhere? Or is there any other reason to have this? --Doncram (talk) 22:15, 13 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Doncram:. I hope you're well. Well, I'm personally not crazy about lists. I had not seen this article until today and so I began adding things to it. Really I would go either way for deleting or not deleting. Maybe others have an opinion on this. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 23:32, 13 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
I followed you here to see if you're well, and I think this article is still stranger than that. I also can't appreciate an educational value, beyond what one gets from any barely-discriminate list (for which we use categories). The tallest, widest, oldest, lightest and a few other extremes from each standard bunch, I could see value in that. Don't nom it yet, this could go somewhere, but thanks for noticing, Doncram! InedibleHulk (talk) 09:32, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
I just learned Puerto Rico has eleven notable bridges (puentes), none of which make this list. Also saw a few of the more specific and useful lists on this very subject. Probably fine to delete it whenever, on second thought. InedibleHulk (talk) 10:01, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, I don't think there are any other lists like this, not for any U.S. state or territory. See Category:Lists of buildings and structures in the United States. There are nationwide or worldwide lists of specific types of buildings or structures, maybe because they are perhaps interesting or otherwise have merit, like I thought for List of firehouses and List of Elks buildings and other lists i developed. But no one seems to have thought of listing all the buildings and structures in a given area; the only state or territory category is for DC and it does not have a list like this. I am usually a believer that if there is a category, there could be a list and/or a navigational template, because by reasons of wp:CLNT, the three types are complementary. A list can include redlinks and footnotes and photos and more than what a category conveys. But this list has less members and no more content for any member than what Category:Buildings and structures in Puerto Rico contains. Now, I don't think this list should be developed, and I guess i think it should be deleted in fact. And instead make some effort to make sure there are PR items within the nation-wide lists, like that the historic black and red firehouse in Ponce is included, which it is.
About bridges, User:InedibleHulk make sure that all eleven bridges are directly mentioned at List_of_bridges_in_the_United_States#Puerto_Rico or included in List of bridges on the National Register of Historic Places in Puerto Rico which is a sublist, and perhaps set List of bridges in Puerto Rico as a redirect to there. But don't add them into a mish-mash of non-bridges, IMO. --Doncram (talk) 13:05, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
By "this very subject", I meant Puerto Rican buildings and structures. I see no similar lists for other comparable areas. Not sure why structures like bridges don't belong here, but I likely won't add them anywhere. For me, categories are sufficient, pictures or no. Good luck with this, anyway! InedibleHulk (talk) 18:33, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, InedibleHulk, for participating here. And to clarify, I guess i meant to say that I would hope PR bridges would get added to what is now List of bridges in Puerto Rico (a subsection of List of bridges) which is included in effect here, as opposed to adding all the separate bridges to the list here. Yes, bridges are structures! I hope you will please add any PR bridges we have missed to there. Again, thanks! --Doncram (talk) 03:48, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Doncram:, I'm thinking and I know you worked on many of these lists and categories and you'll probably hate me for even saying this but I think it should be Category:Lists of buildings and structures of U.S. states and territories. This existing: List_of_bridges_in_the_United_States#Puerto_Rico is not quite correct. Whether we want the territories to be in or out the U.S. is besides the point. The truth is they're not. Yet, I've never known how "technical" we want to get with lists, categories and navigation templates. Have a nice day! --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 13:01, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wha? no strong emotions here, much less "hate". About whether lists should include PR within US or not, and whether categories should be "US states and territories" or separate "US states" vs. "PR", i am agnostic. I am all for ensuring that PR places get mentioned in worldwide lists, though, which I think we can all agree on. :) --Doncram (talk) 22:27, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Doncram: maybe "hate" was a strong word (but you know-it's just a figure of speech to preface something annoying). So I don't think there are any other lists like this either. Maybe it should be deleted. Maybe someone thought there should be a list to go with the category. Category is good / this list article is unneeded in my opinion (since no other places have something akin to this.)--The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 09:39, 16 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

I don't really wanna open and go through an AFD, which is generally a pretty negative, opposite-of-fun experience, bringing in lots of Debbie Downers. How about revising this page, keeping it as "List of ..." or perhaps calling it "Lists of ...", removing all the individual buildings and structures currently listed, and just listing out the sublists already linked:

and adding more, many of which may be redirects to PR sections in worldwide lists, like

And add a "see also" link to National Register of Historic Places listings in Puerto Rico which obviously includes many notable buildings and structures, along with some non-structures.
By the way, List of Catholic churches in Puerto Rico is currently a redlink, which is included as a redlink in worldwide Lists of Catholic church buildings, while there is no mention of Puerto Rico in List of Catholic churches in the United States. See also worldwide Template:Lists of religious worship places and Template:Lists of religious worship places in the United States.--Doncram (talk) 00:38, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Doncram: that sounds like a good idea - a list of lists. BTW, the "list" of Catholic churches in PR is in this article here and each municipality parish will eventually lead to a section in a ___ barrio-pueblo article. I've been linking the list of churches here to their respective barrio-pueblo article, (i.e. Aguas Buenas church) but I am slow. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 02:07, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Notable and historic aren't the same thing. Historic buildings are a subset of notable, not the other way around. Also "historic", but by whose definition? A building, bridge, casino, or what have you, can be notable without being historic. If we are defining historic on the basis of being lited in some official list (say, NRHP) that would be wrong also, because many structures can be historic w/o being listed there yet. In fact, that's usually how structures are eventually listed (perhaps years or decades later) because they were already historic even before being listed. That is, there are many historic structures that aren't listed in the NRHP and similar official lists. All the structures listed in this list are notable based on WP WP:N standards; I don't think I saw any redlinked entries in this list. Mercy11 (talk) 03:35, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Mercy11: but look around and no other places seem to have a list like this. (BTW:I know there's a Wiki policy of other things) but this list is not scoped clearly. What do you say should be on this list? Every notable building / structure? --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 03:41, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Right. Thanks for zeroing in. Not in the correct format, and WP:CONSISTENCY would be important in this case. Agree. Mercy11 (talk) 03:56, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Agreed that notable and historic aren't the same. How about our making an effort to ensure all the items on the current list (which we know are notable because they have Wikipedia articles) are included in one or more type-specific lists of Puerto Rico, before dropping them from here? I have just started the process to convert this into a "list of lists" and am striking (not immediately dropping) items which I verify are already included in a type-specific list. --Doncram (talk) 14:53, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Probably some should be added to more than one type-specific list, such as:
@Doncram: I don't know if haciendas and museums belong on just one list. I think they do.--The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 19:44, 19 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

create a List of prisons in Puerto Rico? and can Puerto Rico be presented in U.S. lists or not edit

To take care of Escuela Industrial para Mujeres Vega Alta, an individual item in this list, could/should a List of prisons in Puerto Rico be created? See Category:Lists of United States state prisons: there are lists for most or all U.S. states. Or could it be a section in a world-wide list of prisons.

If such a list (or a redirect to a section) is created, is it to be considered in the U.S. or not. I don't care so much. Note the Escuela is categorized in Women's prisons in the United States. There are 5 members of Category:Prisons in Puerto Rico which is included in Category:Prisons by dependent territory but not in Category:Prisons in the United States (which does include Category:Prisons in Washington, D.C., although Washington DC is not a U.S. state).

Hmm, there is article Puerto Rico Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation which contains a list of current and former prisons and mentions the Escuela. Okay, I am setting List of prisons in Puerto Rico as a redirect to that section, and putting the redirect into Category:Lists of United States state prisons. It can be discussed whether that categorization is right or not. --Doncram (talk) 19:01, 19 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @Doncram:. I just saw Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the last scene with the two dragons fighting, flying through the air, screeching, swirling, writhing, gritting and gnashing their teeth, screaming, flying fast, splashing like USOs ... is how current categorization of things in Puerto Rico seems to me, at times. So I don't know but what you said here that "There are 5 members of Category:Prisons in Puerto Rico which is included in Category:Prisons by dependent territory but not in Category:Prisons in the United States (which does include Category:Prisons in Washington, D.C., although Washington DC is not a U.S. state)" seems like the correct handling of it because although Washington, D.C. is not a state, it is part of the U.S. per some definitions I've read of what constitutes the U.S. I don't think it's about being "agnostic" or a "believer". See WP:PRUS It's pretty clear the US territories are not in the US. Thanks.--The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 19:29, 19 September 2021 (UTC) Updated. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 12:45, 20 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for fixing this list Doncram. Some of the navigation templates have PR and the other territories as Insular Areas and that is correct. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 13:16, 20 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think there's merit in my/our identifying pre-existing lists of buildings and structures in Puerto Rico, either standalone ones or sections in bigger list-articles, and linking to them from this List of lists article. It is a perhaps bigger and definitely different project to take on the varying treatment of Puerto Rico in world-wide lists and in categorization schemes. For example, the List of Masonic buildings in Puerto Rico points to a section in List of Masonic buildings in the United States which I am not about to move. And the corresponding category probably is within the U.S. category. You may educate me that I should not have created that section a long time ago (which I probably did), but I did so in kind of promoting Puerto Rico, saying "Puerto Rico exists" which lots of U.S. mainlanders do not know. I kinda think it is better, politically somehow, for Puerto Rico to be mentioned in lists of United States things. And kinda think it is being too strict to remove the PR sections from them all, or to fight to change the names of all of the lists of U.S. things to more cumbersome titles like "in the U.S. and insular areas" or whatever might technically be correct. That would make the list titles inconsistent, having to change when a PR or US Virgin Islands item or Guam item gets added or subtracted. Anyhow, taking on some campaign that way is a different deal, should be centered somewhere else, than this effort here, IMHO. --Doncram (talk) 23:18, 21 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
For another example, see List of hospitals in the United States, where I happen to think the title is good, which includes a section for U.S. states, a section for insular areas, etc. The title is still good though it is inexact. Lots of list-articles and other articles have titles that are inexact, that do not precisely define in the title itself everything about what will be included vs. excluded. The lede of an article can do that. It is too much to ask, that every article have a title as long as the article itself. So I am not on board really on a campaign to change list-article titles or to move PR sections; actually I think it is broadly better to include a section about PR in any list-article about the U.S., and any campaign to change that should be discussed centrally somewhere rather than embarked upon lightly. --Doncram (talk) 23:29, 21 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

churches edit

There is now List of Catholic churches in Puerto Rico, which is included in this list of lists. But what about other churches?

For example the Category:Episcopal churches in Puerto Rico includes:

For those I just created List of Anglo-Catholic churches in Puerto Rico as a redirect to a new section in List of Anglo-Catholic churches. --Doncram (talk) 07:53, 21 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bank buildings edit

Bank buildings are significant things, and it is time for there to be List of bank buildings (currently a redlink), with a section on Puerto Rican ones. Could someone do me the favor of moving Draft:List of bank buildings to mainspace (and remove Articles-For-Creation tags, so that I could continue to develop it there, without bother of dealing with editors uninformed about Wikipedia notability, e.g. some AFC editors? I am currently restricted to using AFC process or help of others for new articles. --Doncram (talk) 00:45, 22 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

sugar mills list help edit

It's like a tail wagging a dog, to be creating world-wide lists so that there can be Puerto Rico sections of them. But User:The Eloquent Peasant's prompting (adding cane sugar mill Central Coloso to this list) has caused me to get around to creating a world-wide List of sugar refineries (currently a redlink) with a Puerto Rico section including that one and four others, to which List of sugar refineries in Puerto Rico (currently a redlink) can redirect. Eloquent Peasant, could you please do the favor of moving Draft:List of sugar refineries to mainspace? I believe it is fine as a wikipedia list-article and will survive any AFD attempts to delete it, but I myself am under an editing restriction by which I should not move it myself. On a similar list, List of bank buildings, I made a mistake I guess in submitting my draft list (Draft:List of bank buildings) to Articles For Creation where it has encountered opposition, uninformed-in-my-view. I'd rather avoid that here, so please help? --Doncram (talk) 22:20, 30 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Doncram: Of course Doncram. Sorry to hear about the restriction.I have a dumb question. It's just I haven't ever moved to "mainspace" from "draft". So I select Move, then from the drop down options I select the first one that says "(article)" and leave the name as is (of course). It's that simple? I just don't want to make a mistake. (BTW, I added a bunch of sources 'cause I hate when they slap a "needs sources" tag... --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 01:05, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, User:The Eloquent Peasant, you did it right, and I appreciate getting around the inconvenience about lists at AFC. --Doncram (talk) 02:17, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Your very welcome, @Doncram:. I'll try see how else I can help. :) --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 02:22, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cathedral of Rum, or Bacardi distillery complex? edit

The "Old list" included the "Bacardi distillery". Surely an article on Cathedral of Rum or Bacardi distillery complex is justified. See Draft:Cathedral of Rum. Open to it having a different name. Wikimedia Commons photo category is Category:Bacardi distillery complex (Cataño, Puerto Rico). Help develop this and move it to mainspace? Then a world-wide List of drink distilleries is needed (watch Draft:List of drink distilleries. --Doncram (talk) 08:12, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Doncram: I believe ONE OF THE STRUCTURES IS called Casa Bacardí (Bacardí is in caps). See here and Casa Bacardí website after you punch in your birthday proving you're old enough :) I'm old enough. Are you old enough? What a funny expression (old enough). --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 13:54, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
The Oficina Estatal de Conservación Histórica (State Historic Preservation Office) in P.R. calls it the Destilería Bacardí, here. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 13:57, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, User:The Eloquent Peasant, very much for developing the article! --Doncram (talk) 02:36, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
How can some mention of a list of distilleries in Puerto Rico or the like be added to this List of lists article? Note:
The local goal should be to have somewhere that List of distilleries in Puerto Rico could redirect, so that it can be included in this List of lists. --Doncram (talk) 02:48, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Canneries in Puerto Rico needed edit

There exists List of canneries in Wikipedia, but no mentions of Puerto Rico ones, while in fact the Commonwealth has (or had?) the largest cannnery in the world! "Puerto Rico's Tuna Canning Industry Fights to Survive" in LATimes starts: "Nov 27, 1990 — Puerto Rico is left with just three plants--Star Kist Caribe, the largest cannery in the world, the Mitsubishi-owned Caribe Tuna and a scaled-"....

This article in Samoa News explains why canneries are economically more successful in Puerto Rico.

PUERTO RICO LURES ASIANS TO TUNA BUSINESS, by Larry Luxner, Apr 05, 1990 starts off: "When it comes to the tuna industry, this island's efforts to lure Far East businesses here have been a whale of a success. / Except for the Star Kist plant in Mayaguez - the world's largest tuna cannery, employing 4,300 workers - the local tuna industry is virtually controlled by Asians. The sprawling Bumble Bee Seafoods plant was recently acquired by Unicord Co. of Thailand, National Packing in Ponce is owned by Indonesians, and the island's other two tuna plants are owned by Japanese companies. / For all five, continuation of tax benefits under Section 936 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code is crucial to their remaining in Puerto Rico.

It seems like Canneries in Puerto Rico is a legitimate Wikipedia topic. Even an important one for Puerto Rico. Or at least there should be a Puerto Rico section in the List of canneries to which List of canneries in Puerto Rico (currently a redlink) could redirect. And can be added to this List of lists of buildings and structures in Puerto Rico. --Doncram (talk) 02:36, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
