First comment? Anyway, just to say that the SALT was missing. According to its Wikipedia page, it has an aperture of approximately 10m. However, its aperture is not constant because much of the steering is done via a secondary system---I think this means that effective aperture varies with azimuth. The upshot is that I cannot say where it belongs on the list, except that it must be in the first four. Table of optical telescope progression historically (disputed)

Just noting a point of cleanup that needs work. The section has the criteria "significance" so the "Significance" column needs to be filed out or the item should be removed from the list. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 13:34, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Large Binocular Telescope

Is this not on a single mount and meeting the criteria of the "largest single mount optical telescopes sorted by total objective diameter (aperture) including segmented and multi-mirror configurations"? General Epitaph (talk) 02:08, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

The list does not include telescopes that combine images by other means such as interferometry. The Large Binocular Telescope is two 8.4 m telescopes except when it uses phased array optics to combine the two images.[1]. So not sure if it could be included as ever being the "largest". ESO telescopes?

If I may ask; where are all the telescopes from the ESO? Such as the Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun? The ESO 3.6-metre telescope? 213.219.149.195 (talk) 22:27, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

They would not belong in "By overall aperture" since they are "also rans", not a "first" by size. To be in "By historical significance" there would have to be a reference that they are historical significant. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 19:41, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

I'm not quite understanding this. "Also rans"? What? Look, let's keep it simple. The title of the page is "List of largest optical telescopes historically". So where are the big telescopes of the ESO? There is nothing there in the title that says 'first', and even if it were, Antu was the first 8m telescope. So, again, I'm not seeing why none of them are included. If I want a list of the largest telescopes, logic would indicate that I get a list of the largest telescopes here. Only, like, a half dozen of the largest telescopes is missing. If you're saying I can't find it on wikipedia by "historical value' nor by 'overall aperture" (which would be the most logical area), then tell me where I *CAN* find a list of largest optical telescopes, if it's not under 'largest optical telescopes'.

The first list is "chronological succession" so an 8m did not supersede a 10m that came 5 years before it. The significance list includes some (hopefully referenced) significance, could be a place to add the VLT. A more relevant list is List of largest optical reflecting telescopes.
