Talk:List of largest Canadian cities by census

Proposed article renaming edit

This is an article of lists. As such, its title should follow the List of ___ convention per WP:LISTNAME. Also, the current article name states "by decade", and the article includes all decennial censuses since 1871, yet it includes the 2006 census which is a quinquennial census. There are six other quinquennial censuses starting in 1956. I'd like to see this article expanded to include these censuses.

Therefore, I'd like to propose this article be renamed to List of 10 largest Canadian cities by census (or maybe the pluralized Lists of... would be more appropriate). I'd be pleased to assist in researching the numbers for the other quinquennial censuses. Let me know if there are any concerns about this proposed move. As I'm hearing no other comments, I'm going to move to List of largest Canadian cities by census. I've added placeholder sections for the other missing quinquennial censuses for future completion. I also dropped the "10" as it is superfluous and in case there is an interest to expand the number to "20" or "25" in the future. Hwy43 (talk) 22:12, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Support as well. I made this page based off a template for the US version of the same. I was considering expanding to 20 cities, but I wanted to get the base of the article up before modifying. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Profe DB (talkcontribs) 08:17, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Municipalities versus Cities edit

Shouldn't this list include all incorporated municipalities, instead of only those classified as cities? It wouldn't change much, except perhaps a few towns would be added in the earlier censuses. If you go by the classifications used by Statistics Canada, Montréal, Québec, and Laval are not cities, but "villes", the French equivalent for both cities and towns, and Halifax after amalgamation is a regional municipality. And if current trends continue, it's not inconceivable that Markham, the current largest town, could enter the top ten eventually (it's currently 16). Despite it's status as a town, it functions as a city, making it comparable to the other Toronto suburbs on this list: Mississauga and Brampton. Additionally, when North York and Scarborough were boroughs, they were still incorporated municipalities in their own right, and I believe they should qualify for this list. This would also make it more consistent with other articles in Wikipedia, including List of the 100 largest municipalities in Canada by population, its U.S. equivalent, which uses the term "incorporated places" instead of cities, and the original U.S. list that inspired this one, which includes townships, towns, and a district in the first few decades. I'll do some thinking about this and put in a little research before getting back with my comments, hopefully within a week. I'll keep my eye on the discussion in the meantime. Hwy43 (talk) 06:33, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Reade, a week and over two years later, it should either be just cities, or all municipalities. I've just removed the instance of the Halifax RM to stay true to the current article title. Hwy43 (talk) 04:40, 4 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Funnily enough Hwy43, I was just revisiting this article last week and was going to update it to include all municipalities and change the title accordingly. I'm working on an excel sheet that compiles the census data for all years, but it's taking quite some time considering StatsCan is not as forthcoming with historical census data as the U.S. is, and I want to find all the info (especially for the 1966, 1976, and 1986 data that is missing from this article) before updating it. If you'd like, I'll post my proposed changes here first before editing the article, but as a heads up I'd propose to include the Metro Toronto boroughs after 1967 (Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke), plus the Halifax RGM, and then double checking for any towns that may have been large enough in the early censuses (and maybe even include the censuses pre-confederation, which would add Charlottetown, but I'd need to do more research on that since they aren't always in the same year for each province). Move discussion in progress edit

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:List of 100 largest law firms by revenue which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 08:44, 22 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
