Counties edit

I will begin to add the location of each lake (where known) to help improve the article. I'll only put the county initially. TheTrojanHought (talk) 19:38, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

All lakes now have a county. Should we add up lakes for each county or something to see which has the most (looks like Norfolk), or do something else? TheTrojanHought (talk) 18:33, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well.............. to be totally encyclopaedic it would be good to have summary information for each lake e.g Area, type (natural, dammed lake, artificial reservoir, subsidence lake etc.), use (Recreation, water supply, hydroelectricity generation, industrial supply etc. ), river catchment and Coordinates (see also List of lakes in Wales for an example. However, this would be an enormous undertaking particularly with the very clunky table structures in Wikipedia. If it is possible to extract some interesting facts such as the most lakes per county etc. that might also be fun . Oh .. and great effort in getting all the counties done - excellent job Velela (talk) 19:05, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well done to you as well. I'm surprised it only took us 1 day!! Imagine if we were doing it for Finland!! TheTrojanHought (talk) 19:25, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have added Rutland Water to the table at the top and also noted that the order is by surface area - Kielder holds more water (it would be useful to include volumes in an additional column but I haven't had time to look them all up) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stan756 (talkcontribs) 21:29, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

... because of the difficulty in establishing what is a pond and what is a lake edit

Why is this distinction even important? If ponds and lakes cannot be distinguished from each other, why not simply list them all? The distinction isn't made in many other languages, and it really doesn't make much sense to exclude smaller bodies of standing water only because it is unclear whether they are lakes or ponds? How about including them all and calling this list the "List of lakes and ponds of England"? Because it's really sad that the list is limited to only large bodies of water and therefore half useless for anyone interested in English lakes and/or ponds.

See for example the "List of Lakes in Germany" in the German Wikipedia (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_von_Seen_in_Deutschland), which lists a couple of hundred lakes of all sizes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:DF:9722:2C01:501B:9F47:BCE5:7E91 (talk) 20:04, 22 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Former lakes? edit

I recently discovered that was reading a book which said that Whittlesey Mere was formerly one of the largest lakes in England prior to Victorian draining. Does this deserved a mention here?--FDent (talk) 17:25, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
