Change to Italian penninsula?

Would it be better to have this topic be about the Italian Penninsula rather than Italy proper? That way We could include San Marino. Before Italian unification, it was really no different than any other nearby state, but it gets left off of this list. Also, Vatican City was part of Italy for a while, now it isn't, so it doesn't get included, but really should.

Yeah clearly that would be better. Surely the whole point of the article is that - look it hasn't always been italy! there were loads of independent states around. The current italian borders are less static than the penninsular itself, so the latter should be used as the catchment area.

San Marino was clearly a historical state of Italy prior to 1861. It's only after that that a distinction between the "Italian Peninsula" and "Italy" makes any sense. john k 19:38, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

"article" scope

As the recent flurry of edits makes clear, this page (it doesn't really have the potential to be an "article", even a "list" one) doesn't really have any plausible definition of scope. It might be better to turn it into something tangibly encyclopedic that could also be based on secondary references, along the lines of territorial evolution of France. --dab (𒁳) 05:03, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

It has the same scope of List of historic states of Germany and many other lists of this type. It simply includes a list of Italian States.--Enok (talk) 12:08, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

change name?

Most common usage of "historic" means momentous in history rather than occurring in history which is "historical". Ought the title be changed to List of historical states of Italy over the redirect? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:23, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
