Classification

@Maestro2016: Does the list use a specific source or rule to classify which films are science fiction? Films can have varying degrees of sci-fi elements and I guess sources will often differ. Box Office Mojo does not have a general sci-fi category but many of the sci-fi subgenres at https://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/ include films which are not listed here, e.g. Hunger Games at https://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=scifibook.htm and Transformers at https://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=scifialieninvasion.htm. The article was just created about 1-2 weeks ago, and is still a bit messy at the moment. That's something we can work on. Along with Box Office Mojo, The Numbers also has genre listings for sci-fi films. Maestro2016 (talk) 20:42, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
OK. I have added {{Expand list}} for now. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:29, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Film classifications

It was me who added S for superhero films in List of highest-grossing science fiction films#Highest-grossing sci-fi films. I think that was a special case because they have their own genre name and are rarely called science fiction but dominate the list. Two other classifications were recently added. "OS: Set in space and/or feature aliens as a major plot element." That is classic sci-fi, not its own genre, and most of the top-50 satisfy it even though only 13 films are marked. "PL: Film features prehistoric life" might as well have said "Jurassic Park films". If we invent a classification for one franchise then there are 4 Transformers films and 7 Star Wars but only 3 Jurassic Park. I suggest removing OS and PL but keeping S. I think we need to give all the films a taype class all none at all Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 11:26, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
I don't see a need for all of them to get a type and I see no sensible way to give each one precisely one type. Several of the superhero films are also "Set in space and/or feature aliens as a major plot element". Seven films don't currently have a type although Transformers could be called aliens. My point is still that the superhero films aren't normally called science fiction films and I think there should be a way to distinguish them from films that are typically called science fiction. Apart from categories, not a single of our articles on the 27 superhero films on the list call them science fiction films. Guardians of the Galaxy (film) comes close with some mentions of science fiction. Six others Spider-Man 3, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Aquaman (film), Deadpool (film), Deadpool 2, Suicide Squad (film) aren't even in any science fiction categories. ok then so we got two questions to discuss
First question type I think we need to give all films a class or none at all.
second question are superheroes si-fi I think some are (I.E Guardians of the Galaxy films) but other (i.eThor films) has little to no si-fi elementals at all and probably should be remove pinging in @Maestro2016: for a third opinion Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 18:56, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

It bean more the 48H I will go and remove all superhero films, in the next few days we need to replace them with appropriate films Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 21:55, 17 March 2021 (UTC) 21:55, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

@Fanoflionking: I don't support removing all of them but maybe some. Maybe it's unfair but I think a superhero film needs more sci-fi content than other films in order to be classified as sci-fi. People are used to superheroes being their own thing. Does it really matter whether their powers have a sci-fi explanation or something else, or how advanced the technology is? It's another thing if they are full of aliens and spaceships. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:10, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

I am removing them temporarily and in the next few days we can added all appropriate films included any superhero films to the list Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 22:23, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

@Fanoflionking: If we keep superheroes out then most of these should be added:
Science-fiction may be debatable in some cases but there should be enough to fill a top-50. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:20, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Most of them yes with the possible of a no for the following Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Hobbs & Shaw, The Meg, Wreck-It Ralph films these have little si-fi in them unless you can find a reliable source for them being si-fi Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 20:23, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

@PrimeHunter: now we done the first list we need to expend the film series & franchise chart ideally to 25 i add a couple early today and will carry on tomorrow if I can find anything Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 23:53, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
@Fanoflionking: Sci-fi is sometimes debatable but here are ten:
I'm not planning to spend time on adding them. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:15, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

I can added them, afterwards i probably need help with the year chart (added missing years + budgets) and expanding open weekend chart. Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 13:34, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Godzilla

Why were the individual Godzilla grosses removed?2601:241:300:B610:F4B2:42D8:1277:AE70 (talk) 22:15, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

too many films to count individual there was a discussion on it a couple of years back see here Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 00:08, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
The American films grosses seem to be verifiable however and there are considerably less of them.2601:241:300:B610:1D23:984F:8D94:3F97 (talk) 00:44, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

The Matrix

Earlier, superhero movies were removed from the list since they have their own list. However, The Matrix (franchise) is also listed on List of highest-grossing superhero films. Should it be on both?67.173.23.66 (talk) 17:46, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

Godzilla

Both Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla vs Kong are high enough to qualify for the list. And Godzilla himself can be a part of the top grossing franchises, no? Do they count as part of this genre? DougheGojiraMan (talk) 02:03, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
